Vehicle Boot Storage

Evening All,

For those who drive and who have previously owned or currently own a vehicle how did you carry the essential items in your car.

At present I cram most things like jump leads etc into a 25l DPM rucksack however Ive been considering building a false cabinet to go in the car and covering it in flooring material that matches the rest of the car so to the outside it looks like just a normal boot however I cannot remember for hell or highwater on which forum(UK or American) where there was a thread where people posted their boot/trunk compartments.

I have tried searching my favourites and also google but cannot find any decent forum thread with images.

Could anyone on here provide any assistance and please assist me in locating a thread with images(if ya know what Im on about ) as a family friend of the SO has taken pity on me and is kindly giving me a few spare MDF sheets he has in assistance ofr my hard graft tomorrow in removing alot of rubble out of his garden in time for an extension he is having built.

Yes I carry a lot of my kit in my car
I have a number of places that I stow my kit
i.e. under the seats, in the back of the seats (the covers have zips, which means that I can easily access them and fill them with lay flat kit)
Under the boot floor cover etc etc
I find that I can get loads tucked away without it being seen

Cougar, Thanks for the link and thats kinda of the thing I was looking for, I have also seen images on a forum somewhere where its essentially like a cabinet which was shaped like the boot with a pull out draw on what appeared to be heavy due sliders - the daw itself then had diffent sections in.

The concept in that vid has given me some idea's, I'll get my thinking hat on.

Ive got the tools/fixings and spare material left over, just got to wait for the MDF sheets. The car that me and the SO have, has plenty of cubby holes and small storage area's in the seating part of the car itself but the boot is rather large therefore want to utilise this the best way that I can.

I keep lots of stuff under seats but also have a couple of rucksacks in the back, one ready to grab and go and the other with kit that I could swap into the other bag depending on the circumstances. I have put the rucksacks inside black bin bags so if anyone looks in hopefully they will assume it is just rubbish etc in the bags. Its an estate car so there isn't a boot to hide anything in unfortunately.

Look up anything to do with land rover and expedition vehicles....

You'll find specialist firms who put drawers into the bottom of the rear bay, etc, for ideas. I suppose ideally, it would be a bit like installing a rear parcel shelf out of MDF for big speakers?? (Not that I've done this, but check with local boy racers for what I mean!!)

Depending on if you are planning it for a 4x4 (as from another post) also have the internal debate about tinting the rear and installing a dog guard. Tinting the rear windows stops prying eyes but also might make the public want to see what you're hiding. A dog guard helps to stop loads shunting forward and can also be used for helping to stow various pieces of kit, e.g. secondary fire extinguisher, hi-lift jack by mounting them (be aware, depending on weight. the dog guard would need to be fixed more solid to the rear seat, false parcel shelf, etc for safety).

I have all my gear in a rucksack that sits in the boot + a large first aid kit on velcro + fire extungiusher under drivers seat. If I need to leave the car and walk on foot then I put the first aid kit in the rucksack and off I go.
