How are you preparing for today/ tomorrow?

Post by jansman »

:D Good afternoon everyone. An obvious question I know, but how are you preparing for right now?

I ask , because we seem to have an awful lot of interest and in particular, information about global warming, flooding and the Death Of Mankind in the fullness of time. Now, that information is quite acceptable, and I am not criticising it. However, it’s gonna be all kicking off a long time away, as serious as it is.

Right now, folks are going to be facing unemployment, prices are high - and I don’t need to say what is expensive either!

So putting climate change to one side, what are you doing in order to deal with current situations right now?

Very interesting that proper prepping is not of interest here anymore…

Had a mooch about today the camper has been opened up from winter hibernation and it's survived well just a bit of mould from condensation quickly treated and wiped away all up airing and baking in the sun

Done a bit of holiday shopping  got to grab my new Cary on bag tomorrow avoiding the molee style rucksack and being a grey traveler :tinfoil

Currently bench running the ecoflow the battery control circuit is sulking so needs a full discharge and recharge to recalibrate itself impressed the new TV (old one died ) is showing just shy of 5hr run time of the ecoflow the old telly was 3hrs run time..

Cut the grass recharged the mower via solar in the shed next up go feed the chucks once little man goes to bed

Been grabbing as much overtime as possible lately which has paid my car insurance / MOT for the year

Couple more led rechargeable smart bulbs ready for winter
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Been revising preps as we dont need as much/ eat as much
Been chopping wood to prepare for winter..if we are still here
Stacking Wood and chopping some more
Climbed a out of control tree with the chainsaw today and terrified the neighbours..like a horror film !

How do I prep for today or tomorrow .its hard ..I make sure Mr GG has all medications lined up ..make sure his appointments are organised . Try and make sure I do something at least one hour a day to help my head as its mashed
He will have to go on a trial now as he is at end stage so my prepping will be very different..I will be hoping we can prep for tomorrow and when tomorrow comes ..ill do the same again

I was just thinking that we were getting a wee bit off the normal prepping track. I've got enough to worry about without global warming/asteroids/etc etc. And tomorrow is the first day of the rest etc etc so it's got to be prepped for
For me, I'm trying to eat cheaper. Live cheaper. Working out menu plans instead of just nipping round to the shop. And menu plans that are old-style Depression Era cooking as well. Sick of paying so much for food - esp as we are just two people who don't have huge appetites. Sooo first thing is to get the food bill down here

Ditto! It takes a bit of time, jansman  though you make a really good point about the balance of prepping attention.

Two things for me are about working on food prices:
- Approved Food type shopping - I have a fair amount of slightly "expired" tins of food - I really need to eat those soon, they're not long term storage, and I've let them build up a bit.
- I have lots of edible planting - and I'm not good at picking and using it. It's still there for the long term, but it would help *now*. I really must do better.

Oh, and using the slow cooker more.

I've also ordered another foot long stick of growlights, a proper emergency hammer (made of steel, for the car I have yet to buy  ) and a bike-lock type padlock for my big front gate. It's only waist height, so not at all impregnable  but a padlock is still a good idea. I still haven't pushed the button on the fire extinguisher, the burns kit and the CO detector, there was too much fiddling around to do it (I'll post when I've done it!). Tomorrow might be a good day for that, I'm a bit tired now tbh. But I am working at it :)

And I'm trying to walk more - going out earlier in the day, which means I eat lunch later, which means I have the chance to eat slightly less, and maybe lose a bit of the excess weight.

First of all age and circumstances are really important, our background, we are in our late seventies and have been “prepping” for decades often without knowing it.

We’ve always just tried to prep for events that we actually can do something about, (not global warming or nuclear war), storing food and growing fruit & veg, storing water and the means to collect and purify more.

We have propane and a two burner picnic stove for emergency cooking, coal and wood for heating, solar power for lighting and battery charging, medication and first aid requisites, and a chemical toilet.

We don’t live in an area where flooding is liable, our home is well maintained and we keep materials and tools to repair any storm damage. We are lucky that we have some savings and have had no problem as yet with paying bills, thank goodness.

We are quite well set up and are maintaining our preps, more or less, we are still adding to our food stocks and usually buy special offers saving money, just ordered smokeless coal for next winter, always cheaper in summer. At the moment we are sorting things out to make life easier in an emergency.
