The only 'meat' I eat is fish. I do buy eggs, always free range.

It’s not news particularly. The poultry industry has operated on the six week system for a good 25 years. From hatching to the butchers processing- six weeks. As for free range eggs, that’s not the countryside picture either. We have a major free range egg producer nearby. Great big sheds that they release birds out into what is effectively a desert around the houses.

I appreciate 'free range' doen't mean exactly what we'd hope it meant.

In contrast anyway, I was walking along the canal today and two canada geese were blocking the path, with three chicks. I waited for a bit as my lodger had said they've been known to attack people. Didn't fancy getting bird flu from a peck. In the end I just had to walk past them and hope for the best! There was a wall next to the path so no way round them. I waited until a couple of people had gone. A woman with a pram looked like she was gonna wait, could be a long time. Two of the chicks were on the far side of the path. One was on the path with the two adults.

My sister in law lived in an African country some 20 years ago where it was viewed as a civic duty to employ a servant or two if you could possibly afford it. They thought they would buy their gardener some chicks to raise and get him started on producing eggs. They were a bit shocked when the chicks they bought lost the ability to walk at about 6 weeks old They had bought Frankenchoocks not egg laying birds as they did not know enough to understand the difference.

As I said: 25+ years it’s been that way. When I first apprenticed as a butcher, poultry was expensive. By 1990 it started getting very cheap. It’s not news…

Canadas will usually walk out of your way. As for pecking ,highly unlikely. Also VERY unlikely to get bird flu. You want to try fishing . Canadas, swans, moorhens, coots, the lot swimming in front of you all day. No bother to an angler. I only ever had one swan get bolshy with me. It was a Cob who thought he owned that stretch of the river. When I was packing up he went for me,but it got a boot up the a*se! it stopped bothering anglers and dog walkers after that! Oh,and they don’t break your arm when they flap their wings!
