Ok hope it is ok to put this on here is my tins i have made for the wife and i grab and go bags .
In the tin is ,clipper lighter , and a spare clipper flint wheel and flnts , a magnesium fire lighter bar and striker , i am going to be sticking match paper in the lid and add wet weather matches , on the tinder side i have char cloth , shavings of fat wood plus 2 pieces of fat wood , vaseline cottonwool balls , some jute string , i am also going to try and get a tealight candle (not sure if i go plain of citronella for the added fact insect repellent)
Now i know this is not a home fire starting kit this is design that in the event that we do get pushed in to doing a runner from here we would have the stuff to get a fire going , and not to sound sexist here but come on gents please try and help and teach the ladies how to do stuff just think you have done a runner from your home your on the road you go to a quiet spot and low and behold you have an injury meaning you can't light the fire and so on your wife is left there wonderign what to do , also i am goiong to try and photo copy the fire starting pages from my mini sas survival guide and pop in the tin with the added bonus you can use the paper to burn if you need it.
I know my wife and i are both disabled and huge medical issues but i want to give us a fighting chance hence doing the grab bags , some people ask me why do it and i always say the same things said to me "fail to prepare , prepare to fail" plus a few other choice ones over the years but it is right people think preppers are a little squirrels but if the pwoer goes or the lights go or god forbid it got to roits and stealing i want the best chance possible of getting out and moving on .
If people like this i will also do a full grab bag list when we finish the new ones our older ones focused to much on food and not enough of the full survival kit , we now have full medical kits in bo6th bags n sewing and so on it is just when you sit and think hmm well i could end up with a bag that would take a lorry to move but if you can compact it down to just enough to get you going it is do able , but again bare in mind we are disabled and struggle these bags will just make life that little bit easier should we need to , i want to put as much in place to protect my wife and my niece as i can .
Fire lighting kit finished
Re: Fire lighting kit finished
Nice. What's the thing with the ruler? And what's the magnesium thing, is it like a ferro rod?
I don't have a specific fire tin like that. I'll have a look at my bugout fire gear list. I have a 3-7 day bugout bag, plus a long term one. The long term one is additional stuff, I'd still need the 3-7 day bag.
3-7 day ie main bugout bag
Bic mini lighters (three, just added another, so four)
chapstick (bit like vaseline)
windproof matches (one tub)
credit card magnifier
magnifying glass
magnifier on compass
long term 'extras' (INCH) bag
biggish ferro rod plus striker
spare mini ferro rod (not much cop tbh)
bag of cotton wool balls, small tub vaseline
I prefer lighters to windproof matches. Mine are probably all disposable so should really get a refillable one.
Main bugout bag also contains:
Titanium mug/pot (1.1 litre)
Tianium hanging chain.
Inside the pot is a small gas canister and a canister-top stove (Soto Windmaster), plus probably a lighter and/or matches.
INCH bag also contains:
Titanium folding wood stove.
The chain is for if I run out of gas and don't have the folding stove, I can use stones to contain a wood fire and hang the pot over it.

another handy thing to add would be one or two of the joke candles that relight after being blown out, very handy in windy conditions and once lit saves on your matches and lighter, some birch bark and a small king alfreds cake

Re: Fire lighting kit finished
hi sorry for late replies the bit that looks like a ruler is the steel for want of a btter description the metal block under it is a solid magnesiunm block with a ferrious rod mounted on top and it means you can scrap some mag on to the tinder to help it catch .Frnc wrote: ↑Tue Dec 27, 2022 3:50 pm Nice.
