Cash on Hand (CoH)
Re: Cash on Hand (CoH)
Yes quite... I was in a shop yesterday and overhead a couple of guys talking about the sale on in that particular shop. They couldn't work out what %15 off was, and I heard one of them say 'how do you work out percentages'

Cash? What is that? Totally skint and up to my eyes in debt.
If I had money I would be buying gold. Totally fireproof, small enough to carry in a BoB, increases in value (unlike money) and if the monetary system collapses you can still use it, whereas cash will be useless. You will see people going round with wheelbarrows full of 50's trying to buy a loaf of bread.
Someone will probably mug you for the wheelbarrow.
Silver is also an option, maybe better, because you can have smaller denominations. If you need a loaf of bread and all you have is a Krugerand and they don't have change, you lose out, but a silver dollar or similar is better.

Re: Cash on Hand (CoH)
They were saying on the radio yesterday that gold was starting to fall back a little bit but that silver, which had peaked around $50 was now in the low $30's. .
If I had some spare cash I would probably invest in some but knowing my luck it would be just before a dive in it's value

How do we know that gold does keep it's value in a SHTF situation ? We here in the UK haven't ever had any experience of it, so what if it became useless- and as you say , the wheelbarrow was of more value?

Re: Cash on Hand (CoH)
I guess a lot of it has to do with peoples perception.
I know money has absolutely no value but as long as people accept it, I will keep using it. When the monetary system collapses it will be worthless. Money used to be backed by gold. If you went into the Bank Of England (a privately owned bank) produced a £10 note and demanded £10 you get one of two things. Either, a brand new £10 note or get arrested. People have tried this and got arrested.
People's perception of gold and silver is totally different and I doubt it will ever change.
Do not be confused with diamonds. Diamonds are not worth anything like you think they are. De Beers control the price of diamonds to keep the price up. Try selling a second hand diamond and you will see. In some parts of the world you can find diamonds above ground. Try and sell them and they will classed as blood diamonds.
De Beers only allow something like 200 diamond dealers in the world and they have to purchase their diamonds from them. One of the biggest scams going.

Re: Cash on Hand (CoH)
I can't agree that people will always take gold.
Driving in France a couple of years ago I was flagged down on a back road and given a story (in English) that the man's car had broken down and he needed €20 and would sell his chunky gold ring for it. I declined politely saying I was on the way to the bank as I also was broke.
Was it a scam, was the ring gold, would he grab my wallet if I brought it out, would his mates suddenly show up? and that is on a sunny day with no problems around. What would people do when doom and destruction is all around.
I believe people will accept what they will recognise and trust. If he had offered £20 of Sterling especially coins, of course I would have given him €20.

£800 stashed in a hidden place for emergencies all in £10 or £20 notes. This has made me realise I need to convert some to coins. It had never occurred to me that you could affect your insurance regarding cash till I started reading places like uk-preppers. Something else to add to the never ending todo list.
Re: Cash on Hand (CoH)
Yes,we always have COH.It helps that I am paid in cash.Plastic is ok when there is power or the terminals are working. Its also useful for paying tradesmen and "getting a good deal"because vat bumps the bill up!
