Peppers/Chillies - advice needed

Post by itsybitsy »

I have got two pepper plants coming on nicely on the guest bedroom windowsill. When can I put them outside? I was thinking end of May, as it's still a bit chilly at the moment. How much space do they need? Will I need to stake them?

I've just planted some chillies too - they are also upstairs. Can they even go outside or would I be better growing them indoors?

I've just put my peppers outside to harden off and will be bringing them in at night. Poor things won't know what's hit them in this wind! I think you can do the same for chillies too, although both peppers and chillies are best in a greenhouse rather than outside. If you have a sunny, sheltered spot you could try planting them out once you have hardened them off. I know a lot of people will grow their chillies on the window ledge though.

I have popped them outside to get some sunshine today, but it is very windy! I'll bring them in at teatime. Then I'll put them outside for a couple of hours every night when I get home from work. I don't want to leave them out all day just yet.
