Hi-tech foods: eg. Huel & Soylent

Post by sethorly »

Could the new hi-tech foods that are appearing (eg. "Soylent", and "Huel") be a suitable option for preppers? Everything you need in powdered form - just add water.

This is the article that got me thinking: https://www.theguardian.com/science/201 ... ood-powder

Huel: https://huel.com/products/huel - 112 meals of 500 calories each c.£162. Shelf life of unopened packet "1 year".

Soylent: https://jakefood.com/product/jake-sports/ - 80 meals of 3000 calories each c.£185. Shelf life of unopened packet "1 year before nutrition decreases".

I use Huel because its near a whole food and it is good. Its got no maltodextrin in it and maltodextrin damages the upper digestive tract.
If packaged it lasts a year but when opened it lasts less, but I don't normally leave it for too long. the gluten free version is greet for me and also it can make a lovely breakfast or a quick solution when you couldn't be blowed to do any cooking. Its not too pricey per usage when you factor in the convenience and the fact that its not too bad for you.

You can buy it occasionally in 100G pouches (1/5th your daily calorific value) and that makes an ok MRE ish thingy.

But remember its a 1 year shelf life unopened. Not 3 years. So think carefully before you stock up with tonnes and work out how you want to use it.
