potatoes in water butts

Post by cornerstone »

Have been thinking of some better potato ways and think i might have a go at the vertical layer way of potatoes but in water butts with the drilled drainage holes and in winter they can go in the outhouse it has windows so that can be a year long way of growing, not sure how many from 2 x 225 litre sizes but should be fair i reckon
will keep you posted of results the garden catalouge said it would work that way anyway.

we used to grow them in old bins when the wheelie bins decended on the area could get a half decent crop...

car tyres are another cheap planter stuff the inner of the tyre with newspaper to save soil and provide a bit of insulation..

as the crop grows add another tyre and newspaper then top up with soil then up again and again...

when ready to harvest knocking the tyres over makes them easy to harvest

What a brilliant idea with the tyres! I'm still not sure how many times you need to top up the soil around spuds though. My first crop is about to burst into flower so the should be ready soon! So bloody excited the anticipation is killing me
