Thats the way it starts

I'm building up the stocks before flu season hits - got one of my last deliveries arriving today, then I'm more or less set until April, for everything except tinned potatoes (which take up an awful lot of space!) and fresh and frozen veg. Peas, I'll soak dried ones, but others, like brassicas etc, I'm going to use them to experiment with dehydration, finally. First experiment will be with frozen fruit, there was a lot on offer this week.

Don't dehydrate bassicas - ferment them! Look up some kim chi recipes and experiment. It is falling-off-a-log simple, healthy, preserves vitamins and trace elements, and has been used as a preserving method for a couple of thousand years.

Mmmmm. Might make a new batch this weekend, it's been a while.

+1 on the fermentation. I make Sauerkraut and it's NOTHING like the awful stuff you get in the shops.

How about dehydrating sliced new potatoes? If you par boil, cool and slice rinse in water with a tbsp lemon juice and then process till rock hard they are a great standby.

Have fun with the new toy. Make sure you've got plenty Kinder jars to fill. ;)

Edit, kinder, I meant Kilner :?

Thanks for the input on the dehydrating, peeps, much appreciated :)

Fermenting! It would be great to learn how to do that, I'll have a go when I've learned dehydrating

I've got lots of glass jars saved - peanut butter, honey, and pesto jars, mostly, with increasing numbers of socking great big jars that have held pickled onions or pickled beetroot

My ambition with the dehydrator in the medium term is to make my own pesto/salsa verde: lemon balm, nettles, mint, oregano, chives, dandelions and other edibles are all in my back garden, plus beech, blackberry leaves, hawthorn and *lots* more nettles on local country footpaths. But hopefully I'll be christening it on Saturday, just bought a kilo of red seedless grapes on offer from Sainsbo

I love dehydrating seedless grapes- find the black ones are a little sweeter than the red.
As I am sure you know do give em a real good wash to remove the stuff they are sprayed with as it tastes awful
Also love dehydrating pineapple-Tesco had some good sized ones on offer last week lovely when dehydrated but watch your teeth as quite acidic but great for joints!
Best of luck with the dehydrating-and do try making your own kimchi-fabulous!

Hey guys its been a while hope everyone is safe healthy and happy.

Just been making my first preparations for winter this week, I am expecting a bad one this year because the last couple have not been too bad at all, So by my reckoning we are due a bad one.

Been looking online for some new rain ponchos as mine are starting to age a bit, Cant recommend ponchos enough for general day to day use.

Not much else going on prepping wise at the moment but i shall keep you posted if anything comes up.

Hope all is well folks.
Having food, water and shelter are not a right.
They are a responsibility.

So make it your priority.
