For heating maybe do some research into bioethanol fireplaces (if you haven't got a chimney). Not a full time heating solution, but it sure can help if the power goes and you need to boost the temperature by a few degrees.
For alternative cooking, alcohol stoves and "briefcase" camping gas stoves. You can get cheap gas cylinders from B+M stores if there is one near you.
And naturally, hot water bottles and a kettle!
If you have any outdoor space, then maybe a kelley kettle which can provide enough hot water for a washing up load (at a stretch).
Water purification tablets can be got cheapish online.
If you have a few extra pennies put aside, a countertop water distiller could also help with water security issues.
