Just preparing for my annual two weeks holiday in the freezing Alston moors, planning how i'm going to get the cash to change the car etc. Aye NickDutch, prepping is about all aspects of life, from when we have plenty to go around and then in harder times how we can do without, having had not a lot for years, me and the first Mrs DustyDog used to walk around the supermarket with a calculator to make sure we had the cash to pay for our shopping every week, not as bad now but sometimes, when car needs fixing or as now replacing it gets tight again so you are bang on with looking at financial issues to prep for, i think it is something we all need to think about in these times, even if it means living off some of our foods preps when that big bill comes in, having prepped can be a huge help.

Ordered myself another mains powered countertop water distiller. The first one I got a few years ago... how can i say it? Wellllll.... It was made with love in the Peoples Republic of China...... Ok, most of my toys are... but sometimes it seems that they made it with love and hope that the love will undo the damage done by the nasty toxic chemical plasticy crud that they use in the factories to make the stuff.

It always tasted of plastic all the time after numerous boilings and made me feel bad. Its only real use is to make water for the steam iron or steam cleaner and possibly the car batteries if I do one day get a car.

The one I ordered this week is : ViaFosa Water Distiller

Yes, its a bit of a toy, but as far as things I put in my body are concerned, I am slowly progressing to be a bit of a healthy type person and I wanted to get this thing as I am approaching the time when I need to buy more water filters for the brita jugs. If the new distiller lasts me over two years then it will have paid for itself in with the water that it will have made as opposed to the cost of filters for the Brita jugs. And in top of that, what if the water goes bad locally?

As far as chlorine is concerned tap water smells very swimming pooly to me and therefore filtering makes sense, the next step up is distilling. If we get severe weather here in the UK and Oxfordshire gets some toxic water, if I have a working distiller I will be able to drink water no matter what (so long as I have power). On top of that, as I have had a bad health history, it would be good to use the power of distilled water to help draw any "toxins" out of my body. lets see how I get on with this one (and where the hell am I going to put it?)

I thought distilled water was toxic as in it stripped the body of minerals and salts?
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

I don't really see how that can happen, or indeed what is it about tap water or bottled water that can reverse the damage done by water in its pure state with all its bacteria and chemicals.

Its water. The stuff we are made of and its pure.

People say all manner of things and there is plenty of bad science that we all seem to have accepted as being accepted normal science from what i can see.

If I use the machine every day and my bones crumble and I turn into a blob I will be happy to document the process on this forum :)

Got a Costco membership today - partly for me but also for buying stuff for our breakfast and afterschool club. Never been to one before - made me think of a cross between the Ikea warehouse and Lidl's. Been comparing prices, some stuff cheaper at Costco some at Lidl's - so mix and match time. But most importantly the ability to bulk buy once a month is good for monthly budgets and for prepping!

Hey,

I am going to dry run my BI / food preps, want to find out what I have missed. The goal is no external food or water acquisition for three months and no entertainment from tv radio or internet. Starts tomorrow with just what I have in the building. Six cigarettes, one bottle of wine which will go tonight, then nothing... let's see how long I can go...

Dare one say....if you've only six cigarettes and one bottle of wine in the house, then you've immediately identified two holes in your preps! ;) As YorkshireAndy's sig says: if you're roughing it, you're doing it wrong! :D

well in part it provides an interesting wrapper for the typical health based New year resolutions about smoking drinking diet and exercise :D
And secondarily, despite being long term smoker and pub goer, that both tobacco and alcohol are excluded from all my personal prep strategy.... I have various sterilization methods in first aid kit and lots of chocolate, coffee and sugar for trade none of which I eat. I don't really see it being practical or cost effective to hold 90x £8 for just three months smokes let alone any alcohol on top, for both that could be over 1400, so expensive and bulky and not really providing a positive impact. I figure in any short event out to three months I simply suck it up and quit, and in any long term shtf won't have enough anyway so it's easier to quit and not try to feed the nicotine monster. I can see they could have some trading value shtf, but figure luxuries like choclate dried fruit coffee sugar and multi vitamins may provide more bang for my buck in prep investment down stream plus are less weighty and bulky.

So that is why I have deliberately not stocked up on smokes and beer because I would not be doing that normally.

Is the issue that you remove beneficial minerals as well as the nasty stuff? I guess, if you are getting all of your vits and minerals through a balanced diet it would not be an issue, whereas it maybe more of an issue for people who don't eat very well.
