Correct and safe dilution ratios for thin bleach?

Post by Sixxdog_UK »

Hi Guys ,

So I've gone out and bought a shed load (not literally but close) of thin bleach and some pump sprays etc.

I have two questions really.

1. I'm planning to store 1000ltrs of emergency water in a IBC tank , it's not been used before and just needs a good jet wash before use. What quantity is correct and safe to add to already chlorinated tap water to allow long term storage but still be safe to drink?

2. Wanting to create some chlorine disinfectant spray , again what is the desired ratio of thin bleach to water needed to create an Ebola killing chlorine solution?

Many thanks in advance and any info about storing water would be very great fully received.

Sixx :-)

Where are you planning to store your IBC and have you given consideration to preventing Algae growth?

I'm not sure how much bleach is used for "Storage" of water, or if that is even practical? The effect of the bleach on the water will disperse over time if you are storing the water.

But for the treatment of water prior to consumption, use one drop (very scientific!) per litre, mix well (shake) and leave for 30 minutes before using.

And do an intro for yourself before the Mods get you ;)

Hi Devonian,

Many thanks for your reply.

I plan to store the IBC outside on a brick base sealed and have a pipe coming in the house , with a tap / hoselock attachment. Gravity fed will be sufficient to get a reasonable water flow.

Ok it's not ideal coming in from outside , risk of contamination or theft of water , but it's better than nothing. To prevent algae growth I plan to cover the IBC with foil and thick dark plastic to stop sunlight to it , also I believe there are water treatments avalible which can prevent algae growth whilst being safe to drink.

I had also considered aeration of the water to keep it fresh , large fish tank filter should do it.
Obviously in a SHTF situation we could lose power , but it would at least mean until then the water would be kept fresh. I would plan to cycle out the water whilst the going is good , if the SHTF then I'd top up treat and seal it off.

I would imagine that using an outside tank feeding into the house would probably require the water to be boiled of at least treated before consumption, I'm open to suggestions. Even if it was used for hygiene it would preserve precious drinking water.

I plan to have two valves on the feed in case of failure of one I don't want 1000 liters of water pouring into the house.

Also the wife (who is just coming on board with this prep idea) has asked if I build a wooden decked frame around the IBC to hide it a bit!! LoL while this might seem daft it does also insulate it more and keep the sun off of it?

Many thanks for the ratios for drinking water , is thin bleach as good as expensive water tablets or much of a muchness?

Thanks again.

Consider some milton fluid sixxdog, it's a lot less toxic than bleach.

2.5ml per 5l of water, good enough for rainwater.
