It will be probably Lake District or Yorkshire Dales - I want to keep it spartan simple, no campsites, no bathrooms, sleeping on fields in tent/bivi with woodfire - do you think it is possible without being kicked out from the land?

sorry. already found info ;-)

No harm on knocking on a farm house door and asking a few tins of beer will often coax a yes , otherwise avoid fields with livestock fencing farmers get very upset with bio security especially cattle farmers... Otherwise just do the old camp at last night be up and gone by dawn use a gas stove so you don't damage the land or draw attention to yourself

Avon SSS helps Andy but it's a bit of a pain having to cover every tiny bit of skin with it and then find midges walk over it to bite the uncovered skin under your clothes

Well steve I like it, any thoughts of putting in a more permanent/low impact/ camoflauge type shelter using the materials at hand?
If at first you don't succeed, excessive force is usually the answer.

Re midges: Just to recap, I am red-haired and so is my daughter. We seem to be midge magnets  . SSS does not work for either of us and Jungle Formula doesn't always work and is a horrible sticky mess to use. All the midge formulas are based on oil which is a no-go for us ladies who wear make-up and you really don't want your hair to look like you could fry fish in it. The wee blighters love to bite my scalp. The best success I've had so far is using a one-a-day Loratadine anti-histamine - even when they bite, the swelling is either much reduced or non-existent. The B1 seems to be helping as I've been digging up a new patch and only had to come in later in the evening when the midges really get going. They still bite but are much less vicious. The jury is still out on B1, but that might be because we've only been taking it a few days. I try to follow the sun around the garden to avoid the midges (not possible in BO situation) and that throws up a new problem - sunburn. I've pretty much solved that by using any good (check the latest Which report for popular, expensive suncreams/lotions which failed the test) high factor product (we like Soltan Once 40 and Garner Dry Mist 50). To solve the stickiness which feels horrible and stains clothes, I use talc over it. Can't say this is recommended and it does give you a ghost-like appearance  , but it works for me. To some hardened preppers, this might sound fairly trivial, but dealing with the elements and midges and staying as comfortable as possible will possibly be one of the most important preps you make. I've just bought a load of anti-histamine tablets and, at the end of the summer, will be buying up the sun products. Just had to fork out a fortune for several cans of GDM 50 for my daughter going abroad to a very hot country. It'll be money well spent.

if you want a natural remedy for midges, use Citronella.

But not if you've got cats, I'd like an insect EMP weapon myself, if someone would care to invent it
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I use ultrasun which only needs one application a day. It says put till you shower it off with soap, doesn't leave white marks, not sticky or smelly. Comes in different strengths and is amazing. I always burn no matter what I use but not with this stuff.

I'll look out for it. Find the citronella a bit too pungent up close myself  and it hasn't really worked at BBQs, but I think it depends on how desperate the blighters are for blood.

Threads a bit off topic now, but ive had my uniform submerged in something before thats midge repellant and supposed to stay effective for at least a few days, im not sure what it was, but the downside to it is probably about 1 in 5 people seemed to itch like mad from it... but if you find it, might be worth a go? I know ill try anything to stop them!
