Maybe its a question of working out what you are concerned about, working out the likelihood of that happening in a reasonable timeframe, and acting accordingly.
I personally have taken the idea that if i prepare for things that do happen (powercuts, delays in pay, minor injuries at home etc) then that will help me in a more serious situation. But one step at a time.

Welcome to the forum and well done for thinking about prepping.
And as Nick says, there's not going to be a nuclear zombie meltdown today, so relax, you don't have to get everything done at once.
You do need to start analysing your situation though. You should be looking at the risks in the neighbourhood, your needs, your resources, your long-term plans, economic/employment situation, and so on.
For instance, there's a WWII ammo ship off the shore of where I live - a fairly specific threat. You may have a chemical plant or petrol refinery near you - there's a lot of people in Leeds who could have done with a pre-packed bug-out bag and a place to go the other day.
How is your money situation? Do you have an emergency fund? Any savings? Any credit card bills? Get rid of the the
debts first, it's one of the most important steps you can take for self-reliance.
You have 2 kids - what are their needs? What are their levels of skills and resource? Can they carry their own rucksack if you need to leave because of a chemical spill on the motorway?
Do you have somewhere to go? Not necessarily a camp in the woods, but a nearby relative? Friend? Could you arrange a reciprocal deal for mutual aid?
How secure is the house? Locks and smoke alarms? Nice neighbourhood? Know the neighbours? Have a garden
where you could start growing some food? Or should you be planning to move house?
How's your skill set? Can you fix things, make things, grow food? Can you rustle up a meal from basic store cupboard items? Can you make a chicken last for three meals for the family? Do you know where to buy the cheapest, best quality food that will keep you healthy? Are there any skills you want to develop, e.g. herbal medicine?
What's your social capital? ANy groups you're a member of? Volunteer anywhere? Know any coppers?
And so on. Initially it's a paper exercise, and many preps are the same for different situations e.g. some extra food will help with a delayed pay packet, redundancy, or zombie apocalypse.
Hope this helps.

Hi lynne,
where do you start? well storing food and water would be a good start. You can store in behind the sofa, under the kitchen units, under the beds and many other places. Keep a list of what you have and the best before dates. Tinned food will keep for many years as will white rice. the key is to store what you eat and eat what you store. Rotate food as well to keep it fresher.
