Hello from Somerset!

Post by Tiercel »

Good morning all,

thought Id best pop in 'ere and say hello!

I didnt realise there was such a big prepping community in the UK, so Im quite pleased with this! I stumbled across this forum by accident on google and jumped right in

So a bit about me; Im 25 and Im a student paramedic (well, I will be in September when uni starts) and prepping is a sort of small hobby of mine, its fun to daydream about not having to pay bills or mortgages anymore because the SHTF an the zombie apocalypse has come or something like that  Ive been prepping on a very small scale for a short while now, I enjoy fishing, shooting, camping and green laning/offroading so most of the stuff Ive gathered has been half for that, half for prep. I think the main thing that got me into prepping was the time a few years ago when we had a particularly snowy winter, I got stranded in my car in the middle of nowhere, and nobody could get to me until the morning and I spent a very cold, miserable, hungry and thirsty night trying to sleep in my car because I had 0 kit in the car, not even a blanket or bottle of water. Never making that mistake again! I now keep a small kit bag in the back of my car wherever I go that contains a large blanket, a few foil survival blankets, a small MSR stove and fuel, spare emergency mobile phone enough food & water to comfortably last one person 48hrs and more importantly tea & coffee making facilities!

I dont think Im prepping for any particular reason other than its nice to be prepared if/when something goes catastrophically tits up, or even if its just something as simple as a power cut or broken down car.

The girlfriend thinks its a bit weird but shes happy enough to go along with it and just let me do my own thing :D Though she enjoys camping as well so I'll slowly convert her!

Im also quite keen on CB radio, Ive got a decent setup in my landrover - just a shame there arent more people using it, heres hoping itll make a comeback soon with the recently announced changes! The only people Ive managed to talk to on it are some bloke from Exmoor with the handle "Deerhunter" that I had a good long chat with, and theres a lovely old gentleman whos apparantly housebound, in his late 90s, wife died and family all moved far away, his home base CB setup is his only contact with the outside world - quite sad really :( But hes got some cracking war stories hes always happy to tell.

Was thinking of joining RAYNET or someone like that, but frankly with studying full time and working full time I dont have enough time to volunteer anything either!

Anyway, I think thats enough rambling for now, nice to meet you all!

Hi and Welcome to the forum, as to the GF does she not read a newspaper or watch TV Muchelney springs to mind as why we prep

Welcome to the forum, I really enjoyed your introduction. There's nothing like experience to help prioritise some prepping! ;)

Nope, shes the "ignorance is bliss" type. She doesnt really care what I get up to as long as she doesnt have to actually do anything herself
