Introduction and question :)

Post by Morri »

Hi,

I've been interested in prepping for a while. I've been feeling strange recently about the fact that we rely on so much in daily life that we don't understand and couldn't sort out ourselves if we needed to. I've been asking myself questions like - if I somehow went back to the stone age, would I be able to show anyone anything new to them? (My personal answer is 'probably not', and that makes me feel really odd. I mean, I could talk about steam power and electricity and things, but I wouldn't be able to explain or replicate it, so I would be pretty useless.) Another question I've been asking myself is - if things went bad for some reason, would I be able to survive? I reckon, at the moment, not for very long. I don't think that something like that will happen where I live in my life-time, but I hate feeling so dependant and clueless. I'd love to learn survival skills, and how the things around me work. (Ever seen "the colony" tv show? I have so much respect for the engineers/builders/mechanics on it that are able to jury rig things out of scrap for their survival situations!)

Thing is I'm broke pretty much all the time, and registered disabled. I see both of these things as being a set-back for me to either learn the survival/independent-every-day-living skills I need to feel less dependant (including self-defense), or to buy the equipment. I have chronic pain in my hands and arms, and I'm wondering how I can prep, with all of these things in mind.

So feeling a tinsy winsy bit helpless at the moment.

Hi Junmist, Thankyou for the welcome. I've been reading some of the posts, I love this forum. It's not all downhill though, I've found a Krav Maga trainer who has suggested that I start in the senior group for a bit even though I'll be a complete beginner, so that the other classmates won't inflict as much pain - being more controlled in their technique. So I'm crossing my fingers about that. There is always a way, and people can be really great!

Looking forward to chatting with you in the main sections. Kettle is boiling :)

hello and welcome .

i think the best thing you could do is read , read a lot of books on things that can be taught to others .
ok its not the same as being able to plant veg or build machines and houses , but how many consider being able to teach a prep related activity .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

I like that analogy. I'm going to remember it. I think asking questions like that put you in a good mindset for learning self-sufficiency and prepping related skills.

solar cookers can be made from pizza boxes and that wont take up that much of a load on your arms. youtube has some great examples of how they can be made. You can learn how to make photovoltaic solar panels with rejected cells too. learn how long it takes to boil water to make it pure and ok to drink.

olive oil lamps are very easy to make too. You don't need much kit. £15 will buy you 100 tins of potatoes from tesco for your food stores. Just make sure you have a few spare tin openers in case one dies on you.

there are plenty of easy cheap fun things you can be doing that can help.
