Cash mate and so it will remain unless TSHTF to the extreme, or I develop a desire to eat more rabbit, I enjoy shooting paper targets with a variety of weapons and mean to be as good as I can at it, I believe to shoot for any other reason than you enjoy it (which includes hunting if that rocks your boat) is over preparing for TSHTF especially in the UK, and if one is not careful one could be the cause of TSHTF for somebody undeserving of it, even oneself.

Original point though I would imagine a shotgun the most useful, Archery's illegal, and if we're going one shot one kill you have to pick the tool for the prey and the range you need to hit it at from 12ft pound air rifle up to a .308/7.62 rifle, and most importantly permission from the landowner to go hunting there. ;)
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I'm not into hunting at all but I learned to shoot with an air rifle as a young teenager, the land I had permission to shoot on had rabbit & pheasant which was ok with an air rifle.

I sometimes went out with the landowner and his .22 rimfire rifle was much better for similar game.

Larger firearms such as I handled in the army would be less appropriate except for deer sized game.

From a hunting point of view I'd say a shotgun would be the best all-rounder.

I'm not a hunter these days but I'm starting to enjoy target shooting with pistol crossbow and it's bolts are cheap which is bonus as I can never find all of them afterwards!

These days, my primary hunting TOOL is a fishing rod. Also my catapults for fur and feather. I am very good with both-even though I say myself! :D I have guns, but rarely use 'em. Back when I was a young man, I used ferrets, lurchers and terriers. Boy, we nailed. some gear! These days I like to be low-key. Therefore , if I fancy the odd fish, I am legal to take it. If I nail a pigeon or bunny with the yakkers, I ain't breakin the law with them on my person ( what I use them for may be another matter  ).
I deliberately use the word tool, as weapon is rather evocative imo.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

I don't hunt as I don't need too but I do shoot clays with a shotgun and am hoping in the future to move onto something I can eat! I have just taken up archery, but that's more an excuse to go near my favourite pub as it's a bit of a drive otherwise!

I can also fish but I hate the thought of harming something to throw it away... Either catch it and kill it, or leave it alone is my personal viewpoint... And seeing as I'm allergic to most types of fish/seafood, there's no desire in me to want to catch fish any more.

well i was a qualified military marksman the second time i shot a rifle so i prefer rifles. hunt with a pcp AA 410 but have a AA tx200 for the long term survival as i get a lot more shots.
can use bows and crossbows to a decent degree but dont currently own ay decent one
practice throwing knives but no more than 6ft away. would work if we had more lizards around as rats are to quick.
forget fishing rods, i'll happily make fish traps.

I saw Jamie Oliver shooting iceberg lettuces on one of his shows ;)

I haven't tried shotgun at all yet and figure it could make shooting a bit expensive if clay shooting was all we were to do, but to have a shotgun and do some occassional clay shooting may be fine, Archery worked out too much for my daughter with her CFS, and fishing  I never had the patience, my dad took my sisters but not me, I wouldn't be quiet ( river fishing in Yorkshire and I was 6 at the oldest) went out on boats down here with him though ( got seasick and sunburnt) add to that I've only got the taste for it in a small way and later in life, that said though it may (fishing) be the better bet for feeding us if times got really tough, because the sea's in walking distance.

I do find it strange that people are guarded when talking about weapons on here, we are discussing what we would do in a hypothetical (hopefully unlikely ) situation where the world as we know it has ended, nobody here intends to do a Mad Max this weekend , and as far as I know talking is not illegal.

If you do not wish to talk about such things, frankly you are failing to prep, whenever the rule of law breaks down people will need to defend themselves, anyone who thinks otherwise has led a very sheltered life.

Anyhow to the topic in hand, I have not touched a firearm for 30 years but was taught how to shoot (air rifle/shotgun by dad and rifle in the cadets) so would get something that matches my skill level and gives me "the best bang for my buck" and for me that would be a shotgun, simple to use, accuracy not as important, loads about and ammo fairly common.

Not everyone gives as sensible balanced look at the subject as you just did, all too often someone truely worried about TSHTF scenarios when talking weapons related and more in terms of defence than hunting, can often come across as eagerly awaiting the opertunity to "circle the wagons", "lock n load", so to speak, I love Shooting, Archery, and Catapults, but if I am not guarded about it, making the dangers and safety issues clear then some will be bound to go and do stupid things which will bring about more bans and restrictions on what are to many fun and freindly, family activities.

On the hunting subject I have nothing against it providing the quarry is getting eaten, I considered it, went and bought 3 rabbits from a butcher for a tenner and some pigeon breasts, the rabbit is tedious and not tasty enough to go after unless I finnish up having to, pigeon is OK as I suspect would plenty of (legal) feathered prey, add to all that I am in urban surroundings as many in the UK are, I am in the center of Plymouth which is a bit of a contradiction best explained, being a seaside city the center is actually in the middle of the sea side edge, and between two estuarys, one of which costs you at least a quid to cross by car, so to go rural and get out of the town we are looking at the best part of a fiver in petrol, plus all the hunting parafinalia, permissions, and would we be good enough to make it worthwhile, so I'm not being guarded about hunting, it's a skill set worth having but more for those of us who can do it locally enough to make it worth it.

For me the clue of a mod having to edit the thread to start with, was cause to be a bit guarded too ;) I wanted to engage the original poster in the spirit of the forum ( were not "doomsday preppers" for the most part) whilst making dailogue work, plus I actually want to promote Shooting, Archery, Bushcraft and Hunting as normal acceptable family activities, all our topics are publicly visable here, we are not simply having a private conversation, many myself incuded forget that you have to join, to join in, yet anyone can see and judge us, so whilst talking is not illegal, my posts on subjects such as this try to show level headedness of us preppers if thats a word at all

Sensible posts from all. :D

We just have to be careful, because we've often had, in the past, people discussing the illegal side of guns and weapons - usually how to target people... This is not what we want to encourage as the law would take a dim view of this. There are at least a couple of members on this forum that only ever pop-up when there's a gun thread.

So a sane, discussion of the legal use of guns and weapons (like this) is welcomed.

In my case, I haven't fired an air gun since I was a teenager, nor owned one. Ditto firearms. I think if there truly was a breakdown, I'd set snares for small animals (I've done this successfully before, a long time ago though TBH).
