Small square cooking pot to accompany my hexamine stove?

Post by everyday-carry »

hi all,

I'm looking for a .
Ever noticed how the folding hexamine stove is nice and compact, but no-one has come up with a matching size pot to cook with it?

I was thinking about a tobacco tin, but suspect it might be slightly too small.

Does anyone have any suggestions for square shaped metal pot that can be used with a hexamine stove that I can buy/make?

If I can't find it, I'll look into making something like this, possibly the same size, ideally the folded stove could fit inside the square container to save room.

Army mess tin. It is what the Hexi stove was designed for. They even put the stoves in Rat packs.

What they said :) Use the smaller one and you can use the bigger one as a decent lid. Just be careful taking it off when your ready. I used to use my spork opposite the handle.

Yeah, isn't the crusader designed for Hexi cookers? Still haven't treated myself to a crusader, even though I should have one for my kit.

Some of the later issued hexi stoves have an extra plate (I think) which sits on the stove and has a cut out for the base of a Crusader Cup. I have some in the garage but never opened one up to see how it works. If anyone wanted I get one out and check tomorrow afternoon?

Attack Warning Red. If you are desperate for a Crusader then I'm not going to stop you  but, if you really just want a metal mug so you can stick it in the embers etc then I would recommend a Dutch Army mug. I have both but rarely use my Crusader as I find the handles on the Dutch one much more comfortable in the hand - they are thicker. Just as easy to knock up an aluminium lid for one too.

It is but still works without that plate, just fold the sides in a little:

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

I always used my metal mug myself, it fitted in one of my water bottle pouches with the bottle inside and it cooks just fine on hexi (see pseudonyms attached pic on the thread...i dont remember having the booze though!!)

Army issue mess tins are pretty much still good to go. The smaller one will fit your hexi stove and a ration meal in it no drama. can get hot though (nomex flyers gloves can see to that issue ready enough...i never cooked without them and still use a pair on my bbq today...sad but true.)

If you want to stay mobile and will buy/store/cache the gas i recommend the 'jetboil'. water goes from cold to bubbling in 90 seconds admittedly taking a fair whack longer in colder conditions but the cool thing is you can put on the lit and hold it while you are boiling up (drove round in a pinzgauer in canada cooking dinner on the move!) the smaller coleman cannisters can fit inside and the whole thing will fit in a standard utility pouch with 2x mini gases (sorry cant remember the sizes) or 1x gas and a meal from a ration pack inside it.

Knew a couple of lads with small swedish trangia sets who rated them highly...a little more bulky and are more noisy in your kit. i never used them myself so i cant rate them.

Well thats my take...happy cooking on whatever your choice is!

Nothing wrong with screech! Although I have never drunk it in its standard form....

As an experiment I mixed up 4 litres worth, added sugar, yeast and fermented it out in a demijohn

Not much to add other than it was alcoholic and gave me some very strange dreams
