what is your fantasy/perfect bug out location

Post by dibley »

In a perfect world money being no object (lottery win etc) what would be your ideal location. Is it a castle with a moat, a small island or even a large ship to sail off to happier places. Or perhaps you are more a James bond style person who would like a non discriminate house with a hidden suite of rooms underneath equipped with tvs and food for two?

I quite fancy the island of sark

2 bed cottage with large pantry, half acre garden(for growing) and 2 acres of woodland(for fuel), detached, isolated,(middle of nowhere!) no near neighbours, North East Devon.

Certainly wouldn't be anywhere in the North of the UK (Anything above Cheshire would be out I'm afraid  ), probably go for Southern England or Northern west France, somewhere warm and good for growing crops with a good irrigation system, somewhere well off the beaten track, with about five acres or more of land to raise animals, good crop rotation using late 19th or early 20th Century methods of farming, solid fuel method of heating and cooking, probably get a methane digester going to provide gas for light mantles and breaking down the "waste products" of animals and any vegetation into a usable fertiliser, a well for drinking water, a river or lake/pond for fish.

I would move nearer the equator, somewhere nice and quiet, similar to the above with a mix of a nice above ground cottage with land and nearby water. Then some underground storage and bug in type stuff just cos it's a bit James Bond :D

Prince Edward Island Canada.... Isolated, beautiful, exceptionally fertile soil, lots of fresh water, winters not too bad (by Canadian standards), cheap land and fewer people living there than in 1900

I love where I am, but land is too expensive and I'm never liable to have enough money to get anywhere near what I'd like soooo, if all goes according to plan, I'll be heading for Bulgaria with my lad in the next few years.

Get a cheapish 'doer-uppa' with about 3 acres and plenty of outbuildings, preferably as far away from a town as I can reasonably get (quite easy in Bulgaria), and grow our own food, livestock, cut our own fuel, most of the out of the way smallholdings have their own wells (at least one), generate our own electricity and just chill out and watch the world go by living as simple a life as possible. 8-)

Okay, I'll play.

1. Purchase a farm that's in danger of going t**s up, possibly Mid Wales, possibly Pembroke way. Maybe with a small village not too far off.

2. Arrange for the farmer to become my farm manager, agree leave him and family in situ with a regular income but with a view for stock breeding for a PAW.

3. Take 1 field and rip it up to a depth of a 4 floored building.

4. Build a sodding big re-inforced concrete tanked box, put 3 layers in it. Bottom layer one floor high containing warehouse space. Next layer 2 floors high. Set up as a small community. Family apartments, single sex dorms, laundry facilities, library, gym, range, armoury, med centre, dentists, cinema, meeting rooms, morgue etc Room enough for those I want, farmer and locals plus spill over.

5. Part of the excavated soil is put pack on top to get the field back in shape. Rest of it goes to berm the field itself.

6. Also use some of the spoil for earth sheltering concrete dome cast satellite barn, arboretum and garage/workshop.

7. Whilst at it, install a load of gas and fuel tanks with deep covered feeds. In fact if I can find a neighbouring river I can put some worm screw generators in, :D

8. Install 'holiday home' log cabins on the field for family and friends.

9 Fill warehouse space, attract professionals I need and install a caretaker for the land.

Well you did say ideal....
