Green house food production.

Post by Carefulnow »

I thought I would share some information about a project I am currently working on. I am basically building a Greenhouse which can produce up to 6500 plants per month.

Crikey? You serious Bro? Yes I'm serious.

Being a disabled person I needed a system which could allow me to grow seedlings and then just put them in a automated system and forget about them until harvest. I came across Aquaponics in 2011 and towards 2014 I finished my designs of a Aeroponics system which uses Aquaponics as the nutrient source.

I chose to use vertical grow pipes which have multiple spray nozzles inside which spray nutrient solution onto a plants roots allowing a optimal nutrient/oxygen ratio to encourage maximum plant growth. Vertical grow pipes also have the benefit of filling as much space as possible within a certain area making the most of any Greenhouse.

I will try and link a image once my account gets buffed by the mods.

Mod here, Carefulnow :)

That sounds wonderful! I'm a *new* mod, so, um, I have no idea about posting photos for you - I presume its once you don't need your standard 10 posts modded. So it won't be long.

What kind of plants are you growing? I don't have a greenhouse, but I have lots of windowsills, and I'm tidying the garden by washing lots of flowerpots that have lodged in various places. Not only to grow plants indoors, but to grow shoots - I have a kilo or so of hemp seeds (bought as food, not drugs!) that are about 3 years old, but I've experimented and they did sprout - so my plan is to plant them indoors over this coming winter to use as fresh greens. If it works, I'll do the same again.

Looking forward to your pics. Must think about a better indoor growing system.

My Greenhouses will be mainly growing Cabbage, Kale, Chard etc. Plants which can grow in 60 days. However for the moment I am sticking to herbs which take 30 days to reach optimal size because I want to fund raise some money for my local Parish council. Closest I can get to working because I have severe disability.

How big is your garden in square metres/feet? I know some solutions which can turn a 2m x 2m space into a semi decent food producing factory :D

Interesting.

Dumb question time: Once the system is up and running, how much 'stuff' do you need to put into the system to keep it ticking over ?
By 'stuff' I mean fertiliser and other consumables.

Is Aeroponics growing in the air?
I know that Hydroponics is growing in liquid and Aquaponics is growing in a fish-tank (using the fish as a 'crop').

I'd really like to see your setup.....

I would also be interested pic/details of your setup. I looked into hydroponics a good while ago.

Do you use growlights for optimal light conditions ?

In Aquaponics you use organic nutrients rather than chemicals. This makes it superior to Hydroponics which isn't sustainable.

95% of your nutrients are going to come in the form of fish food. You have a lot of choices. I recommend finding a feed mix which you can make yourself. You can then also supplement it with fruit & veg or meat. When I say meat I mean things which Fish would find in their natural environment like Fly Larve, Earthworms and other insects. One of the easiest ways is to build a bio-pod. See video.

The only thing you need to tide the system over is Iron Chelate. You can also go cheap mode by getting a rusty piece of iron and sticking it under running water.

Aeroponics is basically spraying the roots of a crop with nutrient filled water. And that is it.

Aeroponics can use grow lights but they are not needed in a Greenhouse situation. Growlights tend to be more underground bunkers.
The closet I've got to a grow light is when my Brother showed me one when he was growing herbs for our kitchen.

I'm going try image shack again to see if it works. Hopefully should have some links for you.
