Hello from Sharlie in Combe, Witney, Oxfordshire

Post by Sharlie »

Hi fellow preppers! I'm new to using forums, but have been thinking about how helpful it would be to engage in community-building efforts with other preppers. As a mother of 3, I have been a 'lone prepper' since my now grown children (20-25) were small. In New Hampshire in the U.S. we used to lose power often in heavy snow and ice storms, and it gave me an excuse to stock up on food to last us for a good while, to make sure we always had enough wood, and a way to get the water we needed, even if in a pinch, it meant melting snow in a big stock pot on the wood stove.

In the last 5 years or so, the feeling that the general social and economic trends are unsustainable and that a time could come very soon when being more self suffiencient, and/or building a local support network of joint preppers could make a huge difference, not only for our own well-being and survival, but also possibly to larger communities. I live in a village which, though I'm not sure how to get started in reaching out to people and finding others who would want to prepare locally as well as on a family by family basis, -I would like to begin the process.

Thanks very much Scobie, for getting this site up, and thanks all of you out there for being a part of this. Even if others see us as paranoid and crazy, I think more and more people are beginning to wake up, and I am grateful to have the rest of you out there to collaborate with. Thanks! Take care!

Hi Sharlie! Welcome to the forum - I think you're right, the only way to go is community building in small, local arenas like villages. Its a big debate point, on *how* to do that exactly, but it seems essential.

Welcome!

Good morning and welcome.

To get to know other like minded people in your village I would organise stand-alone evening classes that don't look out of place, but which are appealing to the prepper's instincts. Things like first aid courses, self sufficiency topics, home security talks... You will pretty quickly get a feel for the people around you who think like you do. :)

Thank you!

When it seems like there are myriad preparations that should be made to be ready for any emergency, or even the most likely scenarios, knowing where to start can be challenging, and I tend to jump around from buying extra storable food, to looking to educate myself about things like creating water filters and ensuring that we'll all have good drinking water.

Are there any aquaponic system users out there? I'd like to get a system going, but because I tend to try to do too many things at once, am confining myself at first to just getting some green leafy vegetables started in an old greenhouse I've mostly fixed up to use. Even that is a daunting task for me, as I've read that you want to keep the water moving and oxygenated so that it doesn't get stagnant
and cuase the plants' roots to rot. I was thinking of putting everything on slanted trays to be gravity fed from rain water, as I don't have any electricity out there at the moment. I'm hoping that would create enough movement for now. Has anybody out there tried that?

Thanks!
