Night time disasters

Post by dizzydays »

I watched the BBC2 prog 'Could we survive a mega tsunami' last night. It was that old chestnut of the Cumbre Vieja but one day it'll probably happen. I don't want to argue about ifs, buts and maybes - the point for me to note was that the scientific models pretty much wrote off Cornwall. So without worrying too much about it I decided that as they are suggesting a 3 hour warning I would grab my bob, hop in the car and head out of Cornwall asap, hopefully if I'm fast enough I'd be before the masses.

Then it occurred to me that if the 3 hour warning came in the night I'd have no way of knowing. Similarly for any other huge disaster heading my way. Does our emergency network cover night time? Do we have preppers who are night workers in each district who could warn other preppers? Thoughts?

Here's the current info for the UKP Network:
preppingsu wrote:Here are the operating guidelines as agreed by the current area co-ordinators:

Guidelines for UKP network.
This network is for use when there is a regional/national emergency when members need to receive information quickly.
Any emergency intel should be passed to the coordinator of your region who will then assess, contact other coordinators if applicable and then filter down the network, sharing the intel with network members in their region.
The preferred method is by text.
Co-ordinators will respond as quickly as they can as they also have to balance their personal & work life; they may not respond straight away to your text.
Co-ordinators will be responsible for keeping members contact numbers confidential.
Network members will only have the co-ordinators number. If they wish to contact a member in non-emergency, they must first try through the UKP forum.
Sanctions:
Should any network members place undue pressure on a coordinator (or vice versa) or misuse the system then that member will be removed from the emergency network. We will not tolerate any impolite or unacceptable behaviour.
In the future:
As each regional network grows in size in may be possible to use the network if help is needed by a network member. The co-ordinator would be able to contact another member to assist/offer support. This would increase the support offered between network members.
Alternative comms:
We will also need to consider alternative comms in the event of mobile networks being unavailable. That may be through landline numbers, or radio comms. It may even be possible to arrange a letter drop in extreme societal breakdown.

It may be possible to build bridges with other prepping forums for mutual support in times of crisis
preppingsu wrote:If you want to be part of your local network your next step is to contact the local co-ordinator via the private messaging system, asking to join the network and leaving your mobile number.
They will respond to your request and give you their preferred contact number.
Please respect confidentially issues and do not give these numbers out to anyone.
If there should be someone who wants to be part of the network they must join the forum, be active members and request to join in the way stated above.

New addition to guidelines 28.9.12.
Inactive members will be removed from the networks after 6 months. The coordinators will therefore not be overwhealmed by the amount of members and this will free up space for new, active members to join.

I hope all this makes sense.
Feel free to ask any questions and either myself or the co-ordinators will do our best to answer them.
This is early days and the system may require some slight changes as we go along. :)

I was having a think about this as the issue has been raised again.

Would it be possible for co-ordinators to issue a monthly "bump" by text to all on their network list to check all functioning as it should? Blessedly there has been no reason to use the system since I joined, but as preppers we do drill everything else and a periodic test text seems like a decent battery check....

My apologies if this seems either demanding or presumptuous - it really is only a thought that popped into my mind as I was going through the thread but I fully appreciate that co-ordinators are often distracted by their own lives and need to prioritise! Thanks for all your efforts guys :D

I think it's actually a good idea but I would do it once every six months, for example 15 Jan and 15 June? Mods?

A test message? How would doing one at night be of value?

You should check comms in all possible environments and scenarios, just like training..
