Dessert/Sweet Ideas?

Post by Mustachio »

I just got round to putting my food stores in a bit of order today as it was previously just piled up, so today I got it in some date order and catalogued it and such, and realised that aside from 2 cans of pineapple, I didn't have much in the way of dessert/sweet stuff .... and when I'm also looking after my 6 year old son, it would be a good idea, not to mention a bit of a moral boost to have some sweet stuff in there.

Can anyone offer me any ideas? I was looking at Twix/Snickers etc etc, but the Use by date didn't inspire much longevity.

I do subscribed to the "Buy what you eat...." mantra, but as I don't usually eat much sweet other than fresh fruit I'm at a loss as to what might have a pretty long shelf life.

Also the sweeties are pretty good at boosting the calorie intake.

Any suggestions?

Haribo type sweets would be good.

Tinned fruit with custard.
Tinned pie filling, easy to make a crumble, serve with tinned custard.
Tinned sponge puddings.

Ready made jelly in pots ( although I don't know how long the date would be)

Chocolate!!!!

As with anything, always check the dates!

Custard! That's a barnstorming idea. I planned on getting some tinned fruit, but it does get a little bland. Custard ... my boy loves that stuff!

Thanks

Custard (anything in custard is a dessert.... Fried jam sandwich anyone?)
Rice pudding (plain or with jam)
Askey's 'Treat' topping sauces (porridge in the morning, rice pudding, pancake....... I've eaten the Maple syrup flavor on toast before)
Tinned sponge pudding (simple and really easy to reheat)
Honey lasts for ever and jams are a way of storing fruit

And I quite like Betty Crocker "Shake to Make" pancake mix, lasts long after the BBE and you just add water into the bottle (bulky to store, but great for camping)....Breakfast, lunch or dinner its a 'Martini' dish (any time, any place, any way)

i have lots of tinned fruit , usually the cheapest i can find . the same with packet custard .
crumble mix and cake mix , cookie mix even jelly crystals .ok with o power it would take a while to set but in winter i can`t see a problem with it .
i have some tinned pie filling as well , apple and rubarb .
chocolate keeps well past the date on the wrapper . arm issue rations [old style] have choclate bars in them and they had a shelf life of 10 years . ;)
i got a lot and i do mean a lot [72] tinned sponge puddings when asda were rebranding them for about 16.p per Tin .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

I'm surprised no one has mentioned honey. The stuff is practically immortal and can be used on toast, mixed with oats for flapjacks and of course eaten with custard.
