Don't wait for the frost - get them now and pop them in your freezer. That will do the same job. We've just done that with about 3lb sloes, picked them before anyone else got at them!Le Mouse wrote:That's inspired!the7ps wrote:A little geeky I know but I have to leave home for just under a year so I have hidden a list.
If TSHTF I can direct Mrs 7ps to the list; it's a laminated sheet, on 1 side is a 'to do' list if things go a little sour, if things go horribly wrong the flip side has a slightly different list.
It's written in priority order too. And, seen as the laminator was still hot I did a mini version that I keep in my wallet. I know we all know exactly what to do but I don't think it's a bad idea to have a mini reminder on me, just so I don't forget anything.Hope your travels are safe and fun
I've had the slow cooker going all weekend and I now have a freezer full of stew, chilli and soon, bolognese sauce - that way I have dinners sorted for a bit and I can save some money. Aldi's had some good deals on recently, so I've got silly amounts of pasta, rice, additional bike lights (3 sets) and a couple of sewing kits. I've stocked up on toiletries today because Superdrug has some offers on. Bought a new winter coat as well today - a Jack Wolfskin one. Probably the most money I've ever spent on an item of clothing, but I think it will be worth it.
Made toffee vodka earlier in the week. I'm waiting for the first frost so I can go claim the sloes down the road for gin purposes

It's meant to get colder this week - I'm going to take empty plastic tubs with me to work one day this week so I can go get them on the way homepreppingsu wrote:Don't wait for the frost - get them now and pop them in your freezer. Bought 12x 2ltr bottles of water as a start for our stock good till end of 2015 less than £4 from Marko also a box of bounty and a case of coke both stashed under the floor of the car actually for work but great for winter emergency and and a pick me up if it all goes tits up. Slowly increasing the stock of tins just slightly faster than the wife can use them lol

Got one of those just kamper camping toilets ,it's basically a glorified bucket wi a lid,but it was only a tenner and the way to win the missus over is a few comforts.
Plus it can be used when she camps in the summer.

Making sure there is enough homebrew for sitting in front of the logstove!
filling in the order forms for seeds, and out mushrooming in the afternoons with the dog (now I work brilliant hours).Making sure there is enough feed and bedding for the animals-especially the goats. Got a ton of coal delivered.

Not really sure if this is a true prep but we've been training the dog to find and fetch certain items, such as a knife, first aid kit and cartridges. It started off as a bit of fun but there is a huge benefit in having a hound that can fetch a first aid kit when chainsaws are around.
Here he is in action. He first checks the pack where the item should be and if it's not there then he runs the usual 25m pattern until he locates it.

Thats a brill prep. Iv always been tempted to spend more time training Kio ( my Siberian husky ) but he is very head strong and needs about 4 hours a day which i currently dont have to train him with. He is very clever though and i wouldnt hesitate taking him with me if i needed to bug out. In a SHTF situation i would hope he could help me hunt but i would have more luck with a wooden spoon!!
This week i have taken my BOB EDC and INCH kits, listed all the equipment in them and also a shopping list for all of them. As iv just started a better paid job i hopefully will have a little more money to put aside next month to pick a few things up. Then once Christmas is out the way i could can look at it again!

Handy if you drop something and the dog can find and retrieve itBriggs wrote:Not really sure if this is a true prep but we've been training the dog to find and fetch certain items, such as a knife, first aid kit and cartridges. Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Hi All,
This week I am doing two things to address the winter cold:
1. I am getting a quote for re-opening my chimney and installing a solid fuel stove - currently have an immitation gas jobby, but would be great to get solid fuel as an option before the winter.
2. I am searching for two high-quality, 100% wool blankets - military surplus would be great, but most of these are not 100% wool.
Thanks
