Its that time of year again : winter preps

Post by PreppingPingu »

The previous thread re power cuts reminded me to look up Diamond Lil's thread Winter Checklist:

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2537

I know its only September but no time like the present to think about winter car kits, thermals, and keeping warm and fed what ever the late autumn and winter throws at us. ;)

i`m currently in the process of doing some long over due repairs to my landrover in preparation for winter .
my winter box is all sorted out , has been for a while know .
they do forecast snow as early as october this year , so might be a good idea to get your kit sorted .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

Thanks for the reminder.

Finally my double glazing gets fitted this week and my woodburning stove next week.

I'll check on my car kit as well. :)
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

I suggested to my neighbours about carrying some survival equip as they oftern commute with there 3 young children they thought I was mad
Think I got them thinking yes they may only be going 40 miles or so but if they stuck on m1 behind a accident for 6 hours then a few minor preps to help the kids at least like
Something to do so they don't need to strangle the kids
Blankets food cartons of drink ect
Don't understand people who don't do this

getting more of my seasoned wood in the "use" pile for the fire and stocking up on batteries and torches following a power cut for 3 hours last week - funny that my wife who is kinda prepper friendly can now see the value in prepping. funny how it works out right ?

Candles, candles and more candles! Double-check the torches.

Ensure that my '24hr Pocket Survival/First Aid Kit' passes muster.

Get out my sewing kit and darn my gloves, walking socks and scarf! Ensure that my work coat is repaired - unbelievable warm (walking across Exmoor, or working on Salisbury Plain is a joy, when I wear it - honest guv!) and it only cost me £5, many years ago, from a charity shop!

On the house: check the security bulbs, oil (with graphite) the locks, double-check the heating.

In the garden: dig up the veg. plot again and again, whilst applying organic chicken poo. Plant the garlic in October.

As well as the obvious winter preps IF you have a bit of spare cash now might be the time to do some SUMMER preps......... because at the end of summer there are often bargains available for camping/travel gear - often half price or less. Just a thought!

Get your flu/cold/medical kits up to speed too!
Oh and stash some extra loo rolls - I had to bail out neighbours during being cut off - they needed hydration stuff for bad gastro bugs and loo rolls for what inevitably came with it!

98% of car winter preppes are done just need to get the tyers and new break pads sorted I have got about another 6 months on both but would rather go into winter knowing that they are all right but as pernormal awaiting finaces to finish off. House preps are on going I have been down the old charity shops and got another heavey door curtain which we found we could do with last year other wise just the normal preps and nothing specail for winter.

MOT and service just done. Need to sort winter car kit.
Wood for burner ordered for delivery next week. That'll give us 30 days' worth for emergencies and cheer!
Flu jab date sorted. Need to check dates on cold meds.
Started charging lamps and batteries this week.
Sloe gin on this week's shopping list ;)
Dig out gloves, scarves, hats and thermals.
