Anybody remember where I got this quote from: "the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many" (sic) ...

In the end , we will have to make a judgement call. If it was a world WROL, I probably would trade for illicit goods, if it meant my wellbeing. Murdering for it though, or the illicit goods being murdered for... That breaks my moral code.
I am not a religious man at all, but the good ol' Ten Commandments ain't a bad set of rules to live by , just to keep the job simple in a bad situation.
I don't think the commandments would be the guide best to go by.
I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt have no other God before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing in heaven above, or things which are in the earth beneath.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
All of which are useless without a culture or to anyone who doesn't follow that doctrine.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Fair enough
Thou shalt not covet.
That one goes out the door when you're cold, wet, hungry and have children to care for.

Still leaves torture, violence, intimidation, rape, arson/property damage, enslavement and a host of other actions unaccountable for.

The Golden Rule (most religions have this one pop up) is easier to follow, just pick which version that suits you best:
-Do onto others as you would have them do unto you
or
-Do not do onto others as you would not have them do unto you

Passive or active, your choice.

Either way, it seems when it comes to trading, ignorance is bliss.

And the best of all is still the simplest and nothing will ever change your life more:

"Love one another"

It still beats all the other stuff to cinders!....and makes the world a much better place if we all do this....(I can dream, can't I?)

Great thread. Like all compasses my moral compass tends to move about a bit I try to live my life on the code of Treat people how you would like to be treated. However hurt someone I love and I will hunt you down and make your life hell
So in a teotwawki situation would I steal or trade for stolen goods as jansman said I have already had the moral debate about buying goods cheaply so the answer is yes. Would I kill to save a life is a hard one and my answer is only if all else fails and it is the only way and it would not be done in could blood but in a combat situation and I would have to live with it afterwards. Would I kill because someone had food and I did not NO not even if it meant saving myself or loved ones

I have a fairly strong sense of right and wrong. That's not to say I don't apply 'situational ethics', because I do. But my sense of right and wrong, and the fact that I have to live with my actions and their consequences, tends to keep me straight.

My general attitude is that I'll help anyone I can, even if it means putting myself out, because, well, that's what you do. However, family, whether blood or those I see as family, comes first. Every single time. If I have something we don't necessarily need or can manage without, and someone else needs it, then it's theirs. But I see to my own first.

I'd kill, without hesitation, to protect. Not just family, but anyone weaker. I'd prefer not to, but would if I had to.

I'm lucky to live in a very strong community; we pull together to do things. In any SHTF situation, it'd shift things a bit, but that sense of cooperation would, I think, remain.

It took a little longer for someone to comment on the Ten Commandments than I thought it would!

I've never lived by the ten commandments. I prefer the Rede.

'an it harm none, do as ye will'.

Makes a great deal of sense to me.

Oh I like that! Definitely puts me in mind of the last boss I had when I worked for one particular charity - he was a quarter Jewish, and as he said, "it was good enough for Hitler, so its good enough for me" (i.e. he'd have been sent to the gas chamber as a Jew if this country had gone under). And he had a wonderful definition of free speech: that everyone is entitled to free speech until, by speaking freely, they impinge on the rights of others. Thats when the right to free speech is lost. Same same.
