Tasty(ish) tinned meat?
Tasty(ish) tinned meat?
I'm by no means a food snob, my cupboards are full of basics tinned foods and cereals, however when it comes to tinned meat I stuggle. We've always had a butcher in the family so fresh meat has never been an issue. Obviously should something happen like a power cut or food supplies stop its going to be a bit more difficuilt so I need to bite the bullet and start adding tinned meat to my list. Any suggestions on any which are nice? I can't stand spam so thats out
Re: Tasty(ish) tinned meat?
I'm not a fan of tinned meat. I don't eat it. But I *do* have some in my storage becuase I feel it is prudent to do so. I get mine from Marks and Spencer. From memory, it's around £3.00 a tin, but sometimes they have offers on, which reduces the price. I truly believe that you get wha you pay for when it comes to meat- tinned meat especially. I have chicken in a white sauce (great for putting in a pie or just heating and tipping over rice/chips/potatoes with some veg. I also have chunky steak, minced beef, some of their tinned curries, and chilli con carne. I have tried all of these products and am very happy with them (as much as you can be about tinned meat
).

Itsy is about right. Now I am a butcher, but love spam, corned beef, tinned stew and mince. In fact I love a cottage pie made of tin stew/mince topped with smash type dried potato. Ain't nowt wrong with tinned meat. Just find what suits you.

chicken curry- hotdog and corn beef is the only meat I store as I do not like the other tined meat but I also store salmon- tuna- sardines and mackerel as this is also protein and I'm happy to eat tinned fish and don't forget peanut butter if you are not allergic to peanuts

Experiment and buy a few and try - one of the prepping sayings is something like "store what you eat, and eat what you store." In other words, it's no good storing a bunch of stuff you hate - when times are hard and tough you want the food you have lift your spirits not send down into a depression! I have found that the tinned sardines in tomato sauce from lidl is rather good and I several times a month I eat that on toast or in a jacket spud, so 1) I rotate my stock and 2) I know that I still like it and haven't gone off it.

Are any brands better than others? We don't have an M&S near us but do have an Asda, Morrisons and Tesco. Any good buys from there?

Bit expensive but you could try here - a website known to a lot of preppers! They do organic tinned meats and sausage - all high quality stuff. I've used them before and they run their company with typical German efficiency!

No matter how much or little you order the courier cost is 9.50 Euros, so I find it best to save up and then put in the occasional order for a reasonable amount at a time! I can vouch for their tinned cake too

i have a lot of tinnd meat , everything from mince to spam including bacon grill .its worth thinking about these as you can get them from the pound shop .also worth thinking about ,, do you want to give the good stuff to others if they turn up expecting you to feed them . ive also got lots of fish both in oil and in sauces .most of it came from the 99p store , it was just a case of buy one try it and if we liked it we got a few , well more than a few really .

I store all kinds of tinned meats, Spam seems to be the family favourite. We have regular "prepper" teas where we only use tinned foods for a full meal( good fun and keeps the kids onboard). Fray bentos meat pies, meatballs, tesco beef currys etc all go down well. We generally eat from local butchers and soon what i shoot( again) but i have no problem eating "cheap" tinned meats, Most taste fine and if your hungry enough you'll eat it lol.

Aldi and LIDL are also worth a look if there's one local, from time to time they have batch discounted stuff in at silly prices.
