Machete Sharpening

Bought a machete for the garden (use it as a tool only). But as time has gone on it has started to become dull... Just wondering if anyone knew how to sharpen one? I remember reading that a whetstone shouldn't be used?

Stick it in a vice and use a flat metal file. It only has to be a rough edge(not honed like a razor) to "grab" and cut brush. The machete is the most useful tool in a garden.

I used a grinding wheel on mine but a sharpening stone would also work. You can get cheap sharpening stones from food wholesaler a ( like Chinese food wholesaler a) for around £2.50.

Oh and also, be careful using a sharp machete after using a blunt one!

I second the bench-vise and flat-file to give a quick edge on Machettes, Golocks & Axe's. But give thoughts to buying a puck style sharpener. Lansky make a great stone which I use for my Ontario and Cold Steel Kukri; but a cheaper non-brand might be just as good (only went with Lansky after getting their 5 stone delux kit as a gift a few years back).

But back to the start, if you use a flat-file and get along well with it, you can always use the file on your multitool when in the field (if you A) use a multitool and B) have access to a field lol), just watch your knuckles!
