I don't think anyone can argue against that maxim. However, I store rice and pasta, both in original packaging and in Mylar, I don't particularly like either food stuff and don't them day to day. The reason I store them is that they are long life (especially in Mylar) and they are cheap. If needs be they will be filling and, I'm sure, appetising.
I also have a supply of instant mashed potato, which I don't like either, but, again, will fill me up if needs be.
I don't use tinned veg, but keep those too.
I draw the line at storing Fray Bentos tinned pies though
