Did about 70 minutes on the bike. Bit of pain, but not as bad as last time. Need to start doing more exercise in the house as well.
As well as exercise, it's my only means of transport, if there's no public transport or taxis, so I'm testing it at the same time.
Also it's good for the mind, and I get a bit of vitamin D.
What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12
Have started this years peat digging. Hard job with a dodgy back, but I treat it as physio lol.
Prepping for lifes little mishaps, and some of the bigger ones as well.
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12
On average, how long does it take to dry itself out for a good burn?
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 12
What I’m digging now will stay up the hill until around August. Between now and then I’ll turn them a few times to speed up drying. August time I will bring them off the hill for the final drying by the house. Some of it will be burnable in August, the rest Sept/Oct.

Way up here in Shetland, we are ‘incomers’ from south but I took up the local tradition of casting peats years ago. Forms part of our winter preps. Fuel for keeping house warm, and keeping the heating bills down. Handy during the usual winter power cuts as well.Frnc wrote: ↑Mon Apr 21, 2025 11:24 amWhere are you, Scottish islands?Britcit wrote: ↑Mon Apr 21, 2025 9:51 amWhat I’m digging now will stay up the hill until around August. I stayed in a house on Lewis/Harris where they did that. Also been to Skye to walk/climb the ridge. It's a long drive.Britcit wrote: ↑Mon Apr 21, 2025 11:38 amWay up here in Shetland, we are ‘incomers’ from south but I took up the local tradition of casting peats years ago. I nearly started singing Peat and Diesel’s ‘My Island’ there! Are you from the Isle of Lewis, or is it the Hills o’ Harris…Frnc wrote: ↑Mon Apr 21, 2025 11:42 amI stayed in a house on Lewis/Harris where they did that. Also been to Skye to walk/climb the ridge. Built a new chicken coop to be placed inside the old polytunnel frame we bartered for a while ago. We have dismantled the frame and done a few welding repairs and will start to reassemble it this week. Initially it should be @ W 3m x H 2m x L 4m. We do have another few metre sections to repair so we can extend it further but we will probably utilize these sections separately as grow out pens once repaired.
