How about putting a slope on it and then covering with one of those slippery tarp things. Then you could sweep off the snow.(assuming the run isn't half an acre! )
I thought about that too, but then I wondered if a big mound of snow might slip off and flatten one of the hens if they were standing in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Well, we've found that any solid substance will either take off straight up into subspace or else head east to Denmark, so we built the hen-pen of only mesh. No shelter apart from the coop, which is biggish and cosy. But the snow might settle on the top. Thinking of buying a couple of extendable metal supports and then fixing on a piece of wood between them to go along the top - sort of like a ridge tent, only made of mesh. Then hopefully gravity will pull some of the snow off..

Just purchased 4 bags of layer pellets on offer at Countrywide (smallholders event this weekend). Should last into the new year for our 6 chooks.

Also got some green manure seeds for our beds that have finished producing this year. Gotta start preparing the ground ready for next years crops!

Just winterised the BOV (BOV sounds much sexier than Campervan/motorhome :D ). Removed all the furnishings, drained the fresh and grey water tanks. It will take a bit longer if we need it in an emergency but rather that than have frozen and burst pipes, damp beds etc. Also just found an online owners club for the Talbot Express (the van that the camper is based on), and it's already saved me a couple of hundred quid by showing me how to do a particular mechanical job that needed doing rather than paying obcene labour charges to a garage.

Tomatos are finally starting to ripen so picked a few today....better late than never :D

I'd rather take my chances than miss the flu vaccine. I had flu once - real flu, not the 'oh i've got flu cos I feel ill ' variety. I've never forgotten it and would risk anything rather than go through that again!
