Hello from Dartmoor Devon

Post by drillerkiller »

Hello,
I live in a rural location on Dartmoor in Devon, we have moved here about 6 months ago, getting the veg patch up and running at the mo with a view to start planting in the spring, also have a couple greenhouse although they need quite a few panes of glass replacing.
Have a whippet that is pretty good at catching rabbits, also know where the local roe like to hang out.
We have running water nearby, a woodburner with a good supply of wood, plus our water comes from a borehole and is filtered although it uses an electric pump. Also jave an oil fired range, I presume it wont work though if the power stops? Need to find out for sure.
Was planning to start stocking up on some supplied just in case.
Trying to decide at the moment between a compound bow or cross bow?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, sounds like a great set up. What kind of stuff do you prep for ? There's all sorts of good stuff on here so hopefully you'll find some useful info.

Thank you!
I have never consciously prepped for anything really, its just we prefer it away from people and like the idea of self-sufficiency and do some towards it, its only recently that we decided, with everything in America, Russia and the potential for terrorist attacks rising It is probably a good idea to stock up on some supplies of food, water and water filtration and also some more reliable ways of supplying food, theirs lots of wildlife by us, lots of rabbits and roe although Im pretty bored of rabbit by now, the dog keeps us well stocked, I dont really actively hunt with her anymore, she picks them up well enough when were just out walking.
Also theirs a large well stocked reservoir a couple miles from the house, we have a couple small ponds we were thinking of stocking too.

Sounds good mate, there's a fair bit of info on the food and water side of things on here, I've learned stacks of stuff. Its a bit addictive though, my intention was to get a months worth of provisions in but I've branched out into all sorts of stuff. All good fun to be honest. :D

Remember it's illegal to hunt with either, I've got both, if you're anywhere near Heathfield Newton Abbot, go and have a look at their stuff or Pull the Trigger in Plymouth, no prepper with a love for boys toys would be sorry they went for a look in there ;)
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I've been trying to figure this one out too. A crossbow requires less skill, and quarrels are easier to make then arrows. However, the compound bow probably needs less maintainance than the crossbow. Let me know if you figure it out :)

I have a recurve crossbow, which I'd say is less complex and apart from having to lube the rail, less maintenance really than a compound bow which will also require a trigger string release if you want to be accurate here's some interesting stats for you we used a chronie for this and real tree's website did the calculations

On My son's 40lb recurve we got 132 fps with a 555 grain arrow weight giving.......................21.47 foot pounds of KE ( Kenetic energy) And a momentum of .325 slugs

On My 60lb compound bow we got 171 fps 563 grain arrow weight giving............................36.55 foot pounds of KE ( Kenetic energy) And a momentum of .427 slugs

On My 175lb Crossbow we got 212 fps with a 372 grain bolt weight giving...........................37.12 foot pounds of KE ( Kenetic energy) And a momentum of .35 slugs

In terms of pulling them out of the target they go two thirds of the way into a stacked foam archery target and take some puling out
All are much fun when you can't go bang.

Hi Plymtom
What place do you mean in Heathfield?
What do you prefer, the compound or crossbow?

http://www.ronniesunshinesdevon.com/# I'm told they do archery stuff too and I have no preferences... if it shoots something I'm there.

Why are you shooting lighter arrows/quarrels with the heavier-draw crossbow? Can the 175lb crossbow fire 563 grain arrows/quarrels? (Genuine questions)

edit/thanks for answer, I realise where I've made an error of comprehension - I thought they were all crossbows.
