Rat control Surrey

Post by preparedsurrey »

Sorry but what poisons are currently working on rats in Surrey, I know from other threads certain ones are no longer any good, I've had half a bucket of poison go in the last 3 days and no dead rats that I can find.

Also does anybody have any tips on giving them lead poisoning, I managed to get one in daylight as I heard it at the poison but otherwise I never see them at night if I go out with a lamp and sitting still and waiting I can't see well enough in the dark to be sure of a decent shot

Thanks

I don't think not finding any dead rats after laying down poison is necessarily something to worry about. They're more likely to crawl away to some bolthole to die rather than expiring on your doorstep.

First, do not worry if you see no dead rats around the poison, the conventional poisons cause the vermin to seek water and they usually die between the bait an the water source. The old style poisons also sort of dehydrate the rat and cause them to disintegrate.

When I was what you folks call a young lad I lived near a chicken farm. They had a terrible time with mice and rats coming out at night and devouring the chicken feed.

I was given free reign to enter the huge long sheds at night and shoot the rats and mice with my pellet rifle. I soon discovered that one needed a red filter over the lens of a good strong flashlight to see the rats in the dark barn and not scare them away. They do not seem to be aware of the red spectrum of light. If I remember correctly after all these years their eyes do not glow in the red light. I could center them in the sights and they would just sit there.

I slaughtered those varmints for years. They just kept coming!

In today's world I find myself shooting a wide range of larger varmints here on the place, with much older eyes, and I have moved to using scopes with illuminated crosshairs. I also cheat and use night vision to spot them but that is beside the point.

On todays market there is a wealth of equipment that is not too expensive. And one does not have to be in a firearms related culture to find much of it. the airsoft community abducts many of the tactical ideas.

A screw on scope mount block and a small tactical flashlight slung under the air rifle barrel might be al you need. You should be able to get them from any of the internet air rifle accessory suppliers for just a few pounds.

They will crawl off and die somewhere ,have to say though best thing we ever had for dealing with vermin was a good hunting cat .Not a kitten though a fully grown from a farm or country home usually does the trick.

Glad to find this thread, we found rat holes in my sisters garden, next to her rabbit hutches, we have put down traps but they eat all the bait but the stuff on the traps, i had said i will do a night vigal with my air rifle if needed, although it will be the first live thing i have ever shot at.
they are much craftier than mice.

Get yourself a rat chasing dog, there are several breeds that fit that purpose.
