For charging laptops should be quite easy to sort via solar. Most batteries will support a 12v to 18v adaptor, and they're available for multiple laptop charge sockets.

This is the first one I clicked on when I googled it, but I bet it would work on most of your computers including your CF-U1, metatron. For me, I've been toying with one of these car chargers especially for my macbook, but I can't seem to find one that has very good reviews.

They're all made in China, of course, which is often hit and miss.

For the time being I've just got a 300w inverter which should do the job for the time being even if it is pretty poor efficiency.

Also, when fires, that's a good idea improving the CPU. I wonder if the CPU, memory or storage is upgradable on the panasonic.

I've also been thinking, I wonder if there are waterproof tough cases for netbooks. Ones that just cover it like an iPad or whatever. Do they even make netbooks anymore? Shame that tablets took over. They're largely inferior.

So I have both my Toughbooks setup now, and have started experimenting with a friend who lives a few miles away.

Basically both units are now paired with a Yaesu VX6 with data cable, they also have GiffGaff sims in, so everything is weatherproof for outdoors use.

Software wise:
Microsoft Map point Europe - offline mapping and routing
EasyPal SSTV - for sending images.
Fldigi - for sending text via the radio
EasyScan - As we both have Uniden scanners with closecall

From initial testing they work well, only thing I had an issue with is SDR# as its a bit too processor intensive and run terribly.

I also played around with meshing over WiFi and talking over Bluetooth, but both have far too limited range, car to car at best. Most useful thing so far is running a cheap Bluetooth Obdii Obd2 diagnostic scanner, to work out car faults.

Looks good! I like the offline software that you're putting on it. Are you going to stick a memory card in it with all your most useful media on it? And important personal information?

Is it worth having a couple or even a few spare sims taped to the bottom of it? Giffgaff are extortionate these days, especially on PAYG. They charge 20p per MB, which would be £200. 3 offer 1p per MB and so do Delight mobile, probably some others too. I also have one called FreedomPop, that costs £7.99 to buy but then you get 200MB, 200 minutes and 200 texts for free every 30 days.

Is this a tangent? Might do a separate thread on this, mobiles could be an important prep for some people.

I've got 64GB SD cards in them with a few bits on, mostly using it as a second drive for downloads at the mo.

No problem, I'm in love with mine. It's just built so well and its massively useful. I was putting in a microwave link at a site today and I was using it with thick gloves on to decode emergency services pagers, with all the mist it was intreasting to see the amount of call outs.
