Oh you could use a hose pipe...... But try running a hose from your tap to the back bedroom through several doors and tight turns.....
If you have someone else with you, you can use them as a 'hose handler' (oh err missus) its a system that's used on ships/submarines. There are a few other considerations, electrically isolating the house if you're determined to throw water about being one, smoke a biggy too.

And how long your hose is :o

I agree electricity is a issue / so it gas and smoke but in an ideal world you should bang the consumer unit off (many times removing the electicity means the fire goes out or rapidly reduces in ferocity if its an electrical appliance on fire

Most if not all domestic fire fighting stuff is "first aid" owt bigger than a arm chair half burning your going to have no chance in putting out before smoke becomes an issue im sure its you ive discussed fire safety with before :D

for those who wonder how fast a average room burns:

Sadly like above Fire extinguishers are a sticking plaster to knock a fire back to allow you to escape or buy time for the big red truck to turn up most "domestic size" extinguishers are very short lived in terms of discharge and power and duration most 1kg size your lucky if you get 8 seconds of useable discharge then its empty and useless

The reason i have the hand pump as long as there is water available it can still be used ideal if out of reach of the hose pipe say some arse sets fire to a wheele bin against the house opposite at 3am.... its very easy to use see some kids messing about at a ww2 day:

You've got a couple of options Andy, a longer hose (snigger) or if you can get to the bedroom door (assuming that's where your fire is) you've got the 'range' of the hose to go too. Realistically, especially if its the middle of the night, you're better off just getting the hell out. If you're dressed (preferably in cotton or wool) and have your wits about you then you might be able to do something with a small fire and first aid appliances but there's plenty scope for doing yourself damage stumbling round half asleep. Even more so if you end up going next door to help and not knowing the layout of furniture etc. If your fusebox is outside you can isolate everything and that should help but when things like this happen it tends to be brown trousers time and common sense can go out the window, that's why we have the professionals, they practise it when they're not off doing their second jobs.

I did enough damage at work running with an extinguisher I stumbled and smashed my shin into some steel work resulting in 5 staples to the shin not made that mistake since

When next door was hit by lightning first thing I did was rip the gas locker lid off and isolate it as soon as I got in the front door I got the Lecky off the white hat was surprised when he arrived and I told him it was all off

I've got my escape ladder to get out of upstairs if trapped at night
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

We haven't got an upstairs, so we can get out ok... and we've got a tap and hose outside the back door, if next door goes up I suppose the husband could use that through his windows until the fire brigade got here. If the fire was at the back of the house.

Does he smoke? Smoking in bed and being drunk is a bad combination, often a fatal one.

The landlord is now gutting the kitchen next door. Turns out he has no proper landlord insurance, so no gas and electricity checks. Just the bloke who moved in with his girlfriend and let the house to his mate. Getting in touch with building regs at the council.

That's just nuts, every time I've been asked by friends/colleagues about getting into letting property, getting landlords insurance is the main thing I bang on about. You can play (or could, it might have changed) free and easy with your finances to an extent, ie, if its the only property you own then there's no point getting a buy to let mortgage etc but always, always, always get landlord insurance, even if its going to be for a month. its not that much more than normal household insurance.

Yes I agree Deeps. Bonkers not to insure properly. I have only the one house and I live in that. I have just gone through my domestic insurance with a fine tooth comb with the broker to make sure I am covered. I do this every year without fail. And to me, the cost is minimal, especially if you factor in peace of mind.
