I am currently looking into the diversification of my equipment as we are due to move house soon. I have been contemplating leasing an 8ft x 16ft unit which is approx 5 miles from my new home and using it as a rendezvous/equipment cache to supplement my main BOL and exfil routes.
My question is has anyone else here done something similar and diversified their equipment into differing locations and do you feel there is a benefit to doing it?

5 or 6 miles is a 10 or 12 mile round trip, long way to go for something you need, especially if you're on foot.
Then again having all your gear in one location and then having to move at short notice must be a problem you could do with out.
Not easy to call one way or another, I have everything in one location. Should there be a local emergency where I have to leave I have everything packed and could go in about 10mins flat. If it was TEOTWAWKI then they'll be carrying me out in a box, or leaving me to rot, whichever option suits.

If its security you're worried about, build a Cashe in or under the shed.

There isn't anything wrong with the allotment/BOL. I've been thinking that it may make more sense though not to put all my eggs in one basket so to speak with regards to locations and planning for any BO scenario.
I have seen quite a few people who have done similar things in terms of locating equipment and supplies in more than one location with more than one plan.

I suppose it depends on what you're planning for mate, I'm not anticipating running away to the hills so I keep all my stuff 'handy' in the house. I get that if there was a fire etc then I'm goosed but if things were slowly escalating I could stash stuff round and about but if I had to flee my place I'd most likely be heading to a mates taking whatever I could with me.dannytsg wrote:There isn't anything wrong with the allotment/BOL. It probably depends on your budget as well, you mentioned renting a unit in your earlier post, I don't suppose there's a right or wrong way to prep and it will very much depend on your situation and expected scenarios, in that respect its all a gamble but that's the same for prepping in general, we prep but hope that we'll not need it.
Re: Diversifying equipment locations (caches)
A few years ago I was working in a big city every week which was a good distance from home so required a weekly commute rather than a daily trip. I had some gear stashed in a storage locker just in case.
One thing I looked at was how access to the storage facility was managed. One I looked at was 100% electronic so I had my doubts about getting access in if there was a problem with the power supply. The one I used was a bit less flash but used keys.
Also, if you are going to store any kit offsite make sure its something you can live without and wont be the end of the world if it gets stolen. If you cant see it, you cant protect it!
Just a few thoughts, your personal situation will probably determine what you can do.
Could you store some boxes at a friend or families house?

Well it's actually a lock up garage I am looking at leasing with a solid metal door, key locks and it is 8ft wide x 16ft deep.HBP wrote:A few years ago I was working in a big city every week which was a good distance from home so required a weekly commute rather than a daily trip. Being perfectly honest, the amount of gear I do have could do with somewhere other than the loft to be stored in. I have a hell of a lot of gear/preps that I have accumulated for different circumstances that I feel don't all need to be in one place.
Personally my family/friends wouldn't appreciate a lot of my stuff cluttering their houses (as some of it does at the moment) so an off site (from ym home) external storage source as a back up location may well be useful to me.
