Hi
Okay here is a strange question that I have yet been able to find an answer to. We all know what effects an Nuclear EMP or CME EMP would have on our fragile power grids, but what if the threat came from within? The Earth does a pole reversal every 100,000 years or so and for the last 100 years we have been tracking the north pole shift, over the last couple of decades the poles have shifted more than expected leading many to thing the reversal is coming. When the sun shifted poles last year like it does every 11 years I think there was a measurable EM field disturbance over the surface of the Sun. What if a global pole shift caused an Earth induced EMP? Every device on the planet could be destroyed in milliseconds. There also believe that it could take 100’s if not 1000’s of years for the poles to re-align back to a “normal” position, what if that resulted in 1000’s of mini EMP’s..
I have no idea if an Earth EMP is even possible but food for thought.

Re: Earth induced EMP
The earth's magnetic field is around 0.5 gauss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orders_of_ ... tic_field)). To generate an EMP http://www.aoc-gardenstate.org/archive/ ... april.pptx suggests that you would need "tens of mega-Gauss". Also Geomagnetic reversal might take centuries: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal, whereas an EMP needs all that energy in a very short time period - I would have though a fraction of a second. So probably not a problem.

Pole reversal will present other challenges than an EMP event.

Hello Djorn,
This is an area that I have been dwelling on for many years. Firstly, the poles are very overdue to 'flip -over'. It would result in another polar winter for a very long time, and have various consequences. For instance, the satellites would start falling out of the sky (and you really wouldn't want to be in an airplane when it commences!). But I am not sure if it would happen that drastically fast! In the movies maybe.
Pole reversal itself might not be a problem, but how we live our lives and whether we as people are geared up for it is another matter.
For the past few years the poles have been moving 7 milliarcseconds per year, so I doubt it will be a problem. If it happened all at once then I think that we would be in for a few 'issues' lol.
In the history of the Earth, twelve ice ages are known to have occurred. My opinion is that it would affect the human race 'long -term' and not something that would happen very quickly.
Kind regards
