Budget backup / 12vdc and 240vac power supply

inverter cost me £30 years ago (basic 300w modified sine wave)

battery 110ah (£75 ish)

Box £16 ish

isolator switch (£6.99)

13a socket and plug already had in the workshop circa £5 ish

12v fag lighter type socket £6.99

cable £5 ish

battery terminal clamps £7

few crimps (eyelets and blade crimps)

20a and 30a fuse

i also added a segment of led strip to show when the inverter is on







i am charging it from a 4ah smart charger via the 12v socket by "back feeding it" the 12v socket is constantly live (no switch to facilitate this) this is fused at 20a and as such can be used to charge items via 12v car chargers




the inverter is switched to prevent unnecessary draw and has the led strip to provide a power on light so i dont forget it is turned on (fused by 30a fuse)

Problem is things like postage they would cost a fortune to post out been close to 30 kg and classed as hazardous and the risk of them been damaged in transit


I'll do a full shopping list with tech specs and tools needed when im on the pc

it only took me about 45 mins to assemble took me longer to find my tank cutter .....

If you have a Range store near to you, they are good for things like Crimps, 12v Sockets and isolation switches .They are keen on price.

only other thing to add is a standard smart battery charger

cut the crocodile clips off and you can wire a cigarette lighter plug in their place (centre pin live side negative) then just plug it into the 12v socket to charge


and to make sure it all fits in the box this one is identical to mine bar the label

you will probably find you get a buzz off some electical appliances eg the radio or tv but i plan to mainly use the 12v socket for charging phones and the like if you want to run AV kit off it you will probably be wanting pure sine wave which are a bit more expensive
