It's a good price and obviously you get a 'free' jar.
Just a couple of thoughts.
1. The lid of the jar has been used with vinegar - generally you don't want to use them a second time after pickles. Given you may be relying on whatever is preserved, get new lids.
2. Vinegar bought by the gallon is about £3 - check your market, I've seen it at £2.50. Jars bought in bulk - http://www.bottlecompanysouth.co.uk/ are inexpensive. If you are preserving, you may as well go to town on it! And, lets face it, apart from my own pickled onions, is there a litre of any pickle you want to eat? Especially if you don't have a fridge...
