Hi ES
There's no one answer, it depends where you are at the moment. Do you just do a weekly shop right now? What about doing an extra weekly shop for a couple of weeks, of tinned and dried food? If there was a week long power cut, because of downed cables in a storm or something, would you have enough easy cook/tinned/dried food to last? Thats your first aim, I think. And build it up from there.
Not sure what you mean by ration packs, but unless you're a millionaire, I'd advise you to cost them out before you buy any - just a little bit extra work at the supermarket means you buy a lot more food for a lot less money.

Re: starting food storage
I have started buy tinned items like beans, potatoes, veg. but have seen a company that sell mountain house freeze dried meals and was thinking this could make a good base level food supply then start adding to it with tinned items.as I have never used this product or even knew this type of food was available I would love to hear if any body has used these items.

I dehydrate food ( have a look on the Dehydrating thread) You might find that much more economical than buying packs.
Most people store what they eat. But I only eat fresh cooked food no tins or packets so I store as close to my own food as possible.
Most here do rotation but again I cant as I prep for a few people who dont know that I prep. So I cannot rotate as I dont eat that kind of food, so I vacuum seal it and it will have to do.
So as you can see, there isnt a one size fits all.
If you do store a lot of rice, pasta, etc dont forget to store things that take it from a "I can live on it but..." to "Mmm this is tasty"
Just looked at your link That is very expensive.

Was just thinking about that same point - don't forget things like salt, stock cubes, soy/worcester sauce, marmite... those sorts of things last for ages and have multiple uses.kizzie wrote: If you do store a lot of rice, pasta, etc dont forget to store things that take it from a "I can live on it but..." to "Mmm this is tasty"
In terms of the original Q I am also at an early stage and my aim currently is to up my stock of dried food. Investing in a few of these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lock-HPL951-Cer ... JJAGF3TTCB - and starting to build up a good store of lentils, rice, oats, pasta.. cheap and versatile and can store for ages. Just adding more with each weekly shop.
After that I will probably move onto tins/packets but need to figure out storage space for that.

Re: starting food storage
I think dehydrating my food will be the method I will start looking in to.how are u currently storing ur dehydrated food.as for the freeze dried food they sell as emergency food I think I will invest a small amount of money in to it as a quick way to build at least few day food as have already been caught out with no power for few days and could not cook food or have lighting.
Re: starting food storage
Good idea for dry storage but personally I would buy the ones without the pouring access as these will not be as airtight as the non pouring type. I would also still add oxy absorbers inside. You can by the OA individually wrapped which is great as you don't need to worry about storage when the outer bag is opened.CynicalSurvival wrote:Was just thinking about that same point - don't forget things like salt, stock cubes, soy/worcester sauce, marmite... those sorts of things last for ages and have multiple uses.kizzie wrote: If you do store a lot of rice, pasta, etc dont forget to store things that take it from a "I can live on it but..." to "Mmm this is tasty"
