Just discovered 2 damson trees in the lane behind my house! I have a small bush of a tree in the back of my garden that produces 5 or 6 fruits only each year but I picked almost a kilo of fruits from the trees in the lane. Think I ought to go out with a note book and write down all the edibles I find so i can remember next year where to go.

Had another afternoon of blackberry picking. Went to a bird reserve and it was so peaceful there just me, Mr Decaff and hundreds of ducks lol. Fingers are in a bit of a state but the cleaned berries give a satisfying feeling. More jelly on the way!! I've eaten 2 jars of the last lot made already

Mr Decaff got back from his mothers in Northumberland yesterday and forgot to pick the plums from her trees for me, she leaves them to rot which is terrible!! :x

Picked similiar to everyone else. Came home with some apples for some reason even though my trees are loaded.
On the subject of blackberries my sister in law turned up saying she had some. "Where from ?" I asked. "Tesco" she replied , "no seriously " said I before it dawned on me she was serious. I will confess I just can't get my head around the idea of buying something that is free on the hedgerows and actually closer to her house than the bloody supermarket.
Anyway rant over , near where I work are hazel trees which I would love to scrump. However , the squirrels always get them before me. If I pick them green will they ripen off the tree. I know it's possible to eat them green , although I've not tried them , but understand that it can give one a sore throat.

That did make me laugh so much!! Seen them in the supermarkets and they are so expensive for a tiny punnet, its shocking. I got 7lbs yesterday along with a lovely walk in the sunshine. All free ;)

We have hazel trees near a supermarket and lots of people pick them, me included!! Never eaten them green though.

I would have had words with the SIL and taken her to the bushes to pick, sometimes that's the only way to get through when they see how much they can pick and how easy it is. I'm still laughing though

I could try it but I think I'd be in for an impossible task. She frustrates the heck out of me being so fussy about food. Dates on things are gospel , everything has to be perfect and she turned her nose up at the thought of our potatoes being grown in soil fertilised with horse muck . I have grown things like chard but she won't try it , homemade beet root soup is a no no and the white currant fool I made for desert last week was treated the same , wouldn't even try it.
I'm married to her sister who is the complete opposite and who has often come home with foods that my SIL had destined for the bin.
A while ago we were having dinner around there and she pulled a bottle of wine from the fridge. Can't remember what sort but it was something like a 2009 vintage but my joke about it being "out of date" went completely over her head.

My X was and is a very keen forager for Blackberry's, Bullis and other hedge row bounty, My current wife has no issues with eating what ever I produce be it foraged or bought. As for dates on packages she will not worry about them unless the food is off or moldy. In fact I am more likely to throw stuff out after its use by date.

Ref Hazel Nuts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGFpzYFBeUk

Pickem green when the brown flecks appear, put them somewhere for a few days to finish ripening.
If at first you don't succeed, excessive force is usually the answer.
