Hello, my name is Simon and it's been 2 weeks since my last drink (sorry, wrong forum and very old joke!!)
I've kind of been a basic level prepper for ages without really realising it; I've always carried things in the car "just in case", kept a stock of water with both dried and tinned food in the house again "just in case", albeit a just few days worth. Being one to think ahead I've always kept a stock of OTC medicines for practically every common ailment so that should I get ill I don't need to go out to the shops when I'm not feeling great. Without really thinking why or what to keep in it I've carried for a number of years an EDC bag with basic supplies (snacks, water, first aid, swiss army knife, torch etc). I've even started keeping £20 notes in those Cash Stash key rings on both my house keys and car keys along a small stash of cash in the house "just in case" the card networks and cashpoints crash when I need to buy food or get some petrol. I have sometimes thought about how reliant society has become on basics like mains water, gas and electric, let alone things like mobile phones and the internet and how my family would cope if they failed for a period of time.
I discovered about the whole prepping community whilst researching filtered water bottles trying to see if the "bobble" filtered bottle was worth getting, were there any better alternatives and came across reviews from preppers about the more extreme filtration systems and down the rabbit hole I've come. I have a feeling I could be bugging out down here.
My first steps will probably be to work out exactly what I am prepping for and then get going with that, my initial thoughts are that I should prep for the more probable events first and when preparing for those think about the whole SHTF / TEOTWAWKI scenario and get items suitable for both. But then being the sort of person I am I may well do a proper risk analysis (hazzard, impact and probability) and work on the ones that come out top first - but we'll see about that.
I will admit that I have already bought a small Berkey GO filter system on the basis that water is the most important element to survival after shelter and whilst it is not ideal for long term survival for my family (3 of us) it is better than nothing and can be used for both bugging in and out.
