Monocular Telescopes

Post by Bear86 »

I was going to go Binoculars but i saw a Monocular Telescope on eBay for £2.70 so i thought i would take a look

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Monocular-Tel ... 796wt_1186

It weighs next to nothing ,fits in one hand and can be clipped to my belt in the little pouch it comes in. I know it says HongKong but its seems well made enough it arrived in less than 2 weeks that's got to be a sign that the prepping gods wanted me to have one you can't go wrong for £2.70.

I think it would be more ideal to have in an emergency as its easily fits in my EDB or BOB taking less room than binoculars. Or in post Emergency situation they would be easier to carry on my person and less likely to be noticed unlike binoculars.

Plus it makes me feel more James Bond :D

lol, I have a pair of Olympus 8 x 40 DPSI Binoculars, only cost £30 new, always buy optics from known companies as there really hard to make well.

I was thinking more for been discreet, as with those bad boys round your neck you getting noticed in a crowd they don't exactly fit in the pocket.

True but they fit in a backpack or under your jacket.

Thats a thought - I have a monocular myself, bought it at an astronomy fair years ago, but I've only ever used it on RSPB reserves. Its bleeping enormous, easily as big as an old fashioned pair of binoculars, and the instructions are in Russian ... not the most useful piece of kit ever, but I love it!

Monoculars are small, light and an excellent addition to a BOB. At £2.70 you can't go wrong. I know they don't have the optics of a good pair of binoculars but for many purposes they are a fine choice.
It may never happen. Best to be prepared just in case.

Just brought one of the Monoculars recommended by icrcc, actually been reduced in price to include delivery at £2.30. Really cheap price, will see what they are like and get back to you. Range is 100-1000m so if just ok, still brilliant price!

I tend to find that any 'low' magnification monoculars/binoculars such as these are a waste of time, the level of magnification offered really does not offer any great benefit to 'normal sighted' persons.

In fact I find the restricted view more of a hindrence/annoyance.

High powered optics that enable you to see 'far' into the distance are a different matter altogether.

Not sure how they work for people with people that are short sighted, then I guess it could be very different/beneficial for them???

Could you recommend a monocular that would be much better, this cheap pair is only for a waist band or BOB. But would be interested in a really good long distance pair as well.
