if the SH does really HTF water will be the priority, good clean water, we can live for 3 weeks without food but only 3 days without water, access to a good quality water filter would be needed in this situation.

Those have an FFP2 rating which is much much better than the existing masks you have and will provide a higher level of protection against airborne dusts and particles. For comparison, FFP3 the next grade up is required for protection against the likes of asbestos fibres and silica dusts (from drilling bricks/concrete etc).

Thanks for that clarification, so i guess it may be worth while picking up one or two of these on my next shop again.

I don't think there is a wrong way, i think as long as you are trying then your doing okay, just ignore the nae sayers  i have made some errors but its a learning curve, when i first started i was panicked, seemed to be too much to do and too many things to get so i made mistakes  , i have calmed down a bit now and i no longer want the shinny kit, i just want a years supply, so i am concentrating on that, if something comes up that makes me take notice, i will maybe up the prepping a bit, but for me its slowly slowly catch the monkey ;)

I think that's right. Sort out your priorities, gradually build up stocks of consumables, and buy gear intelligently. For the moment, there is no direct threat that I perceive. Take the time you need to figure out the strategies that will enable you to make the most of your available resources.

Winklebury wrote:Hey guys,

Really interesting thread, and wondered what people might think of my food list so far:

1.) 48kgs basmati rice
2.) 60 tins of tuna (in sunflower oil)
3.) 66 cans of Heinz baked beans 440g

4.) 600 tea lights
5.) 15 break light sticks
6.) 15 litres meths
7.) trangia 25
8.) 8 litres petrol
9.) Primus Omni fuel
10.) 10 cans of gas
11.) Jetboil Flash
12.) Optimus Crux
13.) Ray mears iron griddle (use over fire)
14.) Gransfors Bruk axe - never run out of fire wood!

15.) 128 AA batteries
16.) 64 AAA batteries
17.) 2 x Petzel head torches
18.) 2 x light my fire fire steals
19.) Saws
20.) Knives

21.) Meindl Boots - (go to Cotswold, Snow & Rock or Ellis Brigham for a good fitting, then buy on line lol)
22.) 10+ pairs of bridgedale socks

Am going to be buying the following later in the month

1.) 30kgs Smash
2.) 20kgs Pasta
3.) 7 x No. 10 Can of Mountain House minced beef
4.) More batteries
5.) Coffee - several kilos
6.) Sugar - several kilos
7.) Honey - several kilos
8.) Second Primus Omnifuel stove
9.) 12 litres more petrol
10.) 5 litres more meths
11.) 2 x more Light my Fire fire-steals
12.) Several SELF SUFFICIENCY BOOKS (WILL WRITE A GOOD LIST AND include llinks)
More, but you get the gist...

I have been prepping ad-hoc for ages, but decided that I want to be more efficient, and get in a good 4-6 month base. One thing I am doing is buying fuel jerry cans, 2 x petrol, 2 x meth's (each 10 litres) rather than the bottles it all comes in from the shop.

I LOVE Light my Fire fire steals. They are the best I have tried, having tried the magnesium block ones with a saw striker, the Primus ones etc, and the Light my Fire really are good.

A question for everyone - I am looking for alternative long-term meat. Dehydrated minced beef is great, but how about chicken? Does anyone recommend any particular canned sausage? Or suggest any to avoid?

Peace.
What are you running the Omnifuel on, gas? Try not to use unleaded petrol the additives means clogging, get some Panel Wipe or Aspen 4T, clean fuel, no bunging up your stove.

Meths is great but expensive, I use Methanol which is less than a quid a litre; don't drink it, don't wash in it and your Trangia will run sweet. Ethanol if coming down in price, you can buy in bulk off ebay or even go to B&Q and get two litres for a fiver (buy in bulk is still way cheaper).

Be careful how you store fuel, many such as meths/methanol/ethanol are hygroscopic and will attract water from even the smallest of leaks.

Long term dehydrated meat works if you dry fat free meat, so dry fry then rinse under boiling water before drying, leaner the meat the better long term storage. To be honest I only dry 'hamburger rocks' (minced beef) as our American cousins call it. A can of Spam or corned beef will last longer though and takes no prepping.

Batteries loose power over time, some sooner than others, look at Sanyo Eneloop batteries, they are rechargeable and will hold their charge for months, much longer than most standard batteries. More expensive to start with but will last you years when coupled to the likes of even a smallish solar charger.
