will be trying Brussels this year and maybe greens hoping that the new parsnips are as good as last year's 3 year old seed. Hoping to put in some soft fruit in the front garden after I take down the 2 Leyland ? can these go in a wood burner at all

I'm setting up some containers properly, finally, hope to be growing salad crops, and maybe, finally, some fennel, which was *so* easy to grow in my previous garden, but is agonisingly difficult here ... in the ground, perennial fruit is well set up, and I want to find some perennial veg. People seem very ambivalent about having jerusalem artichokes in the garden. Failing that, I need something super easy, so .... courgettes
Re: What is everyone growing this year?
Jerusalem Artichokes , if you like them,(we do) are a fantastic food. Very high yielding, pest free, and perennial. The foliage is great to harvest for rabbits and poultry as a bonus.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Last year I had a glut of raspberries, gooseberries and beans. These are all in the freezer and slowly being consumed. Potatoes were mixed as we had that hot spell and the plants dried out somewhat but enough to last 2of us for another month. Can't get on the soil yet as far too wet! I think I'll keep to essentials like potatoes, beans and brassicas and the fruit of course. Real problem with the caterpillars last year they even get through my 4mm netting so environment mesh is the only answer but expensive. The artichoke idea is interesting I will investigate.
Always get maggots with carrots. Any ideas?

Plant your carrots with onions - we haven't had carrot fly or too much damage from other stuff. The smell misleads the bugs!happyhacker wrote:Last year I had a glut of raspberries, gooseberries and beans. These are all in the freezer and slowly being consumed. Interesting, always thought you had to separate onions from pretty much everything else...!preppingsu wrote:Plant your carrots with onions - we haven't had carrot fly or too much damage from other stuff. The smell misleads the bugs!
