Just found a camping gaz stove in a tin in the roof space it's one of the pierce can types so not to sure if I should keep as a spare stove or sell. I already have one with the long screw in cylinders as a back up stove with plenty of gas for it. Not really sure how safe these cylinders are. Also found a knitting machine I wonder why that was forgotten by the previous owners
Now I need to get some flooring down and sort out up the properly

Not planning for the end of the world just to survive till normality resumes, while sticking to the scout moto be prepared!
Still considering do I want to survive the end of the world or deck chair on the front lawn with a cold beer?

Those 206 style cartridge type are available almost everywhere! know of about 5 places where i can get them locally and 3 of them are such small shops they will probably open up in a power cut
http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/calor-c206- ... ll-p118466
i picked some unbranded ones up for £1 each a while back
if your unsure of the stove
check the rubber sealing washer where the spike is. isnt perished and try it... make sure tap is off and fit the cartridge and dunk it in a bucket of water and check for bubbles of leaking gas if no bubbles... open the gas valve check it bubbles at the burner and not round the tap and that bubbles stop when you turn it off.. .. shake dry and light it outside and then dry it out.....
never light a old unknown stove till your sure there are no leaks..
If it leaks i dumped one at the end of the garden away from anything till it run out of gas away from any ignition sources
They canisters are safe enough but you cant remove them obviously once installed till empty i use several gas lanterns like this and never had a problem

Re: the things you find in the roof space
I have gas stoves to fit most common disposible cartridges, so no matter what crosses my path I should have something I can fit it in.
However, the stove I have which is by far the best boiler takes those 206's and has a burner that looks like a watering-can rose..... Lousy for a slow simmer though.
I try not to store them with a part used can if possible.
We like pics BTW

Re: the things you find in the roof space
Well after an exciting training course this weekend so I can take scouts camping as the main leader where I could have run the weekend I dud learn that these pierce cans aren't covered by scout insurarance to the chance of leaking this is going to a new home once I can get some pics taken and get it on ebay collection only as I can't get rid of the gas safely.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with this type of stove but if the scouts say it aint good I'm going to agree.

Re: the things you find in the roof space
Can remember that issue when i did my DofE about 15 years ago
and just found this http://members.scouts.org.uk/documents/ ... asJJ08.pdf
I personally can not see the issue ive had far more problems with "self sealing" cartridges that seem to do anything but seal after use,,, I always use the spit check on them now (finger of spit wiped over the valve) if it bubbles its leaking.... likewise seals tend to get more hammer if your on off on off with them every time you finish cooking..
Like anything else in life if you treat it with the respect it deserves it will be fine ...
can remember as a kid when camping we had a screw on blowtorch bottle type (EN417) BBQ http://www.screwfix.com/p/butane-gas-ca ... 277g/39256
I can clearly remember been helpful and after dinner helping by packing the BBQ away it had been tuned off 15 mins plus when i begun to removed the bottle it ignited between the regulator head and the bottle top been about 14 at the time i err panicked shouted for help and run off in search of a dry powder extinguisher having managed to heave it off a tree (french campsites seem to like nailing them about 5ft up on trees) on coming back with it my dad had been level headed enough to screw it back on and stop the leak,,, had this been a stove there would have been no way on earth you could have screwed the burner back on due to the flames.... Oviously this wouldnt have been a issue with the pierce cartriges as you wouldnt remove it till it was empty
There was obviously some remaining heat or ember that ignited it So personally i now treat all portable gas appliances very cautiously
you will find on a side note these work in far colder conditions than the modern briefcase stoves as the piercable cartridges are nearly always butane propane mix
(ps i now know that you shouldn't extinguish gasious fires )

If its something you know how to use and maintain it shouldn't be a problem. However, a bunch of younglings with minimal knowledge is asking for trouble.I'm not saying there is anything wrong with this type of stove but if the scouts say it aint good I'm going to agree.
Knitting machines on Evilbay seem to either be silly money or peanuts depending on if you have to collect in person or not
