what if your home was no longer there?

what if you got home and it had been ran sacked by the local hoodies?
Taking your question literally, it would be to listen to the car radio or the radio in my EDC. Anything beyond that depends on the nature of the problem, where I am, whether or not I had my car etc.

My last choice would be to submit to state assistance.

Im on holiday at the moment (i'm not boasting I swear ;) ) but Coulesy, it's a good point of yours. I'm in a foreign country, not too familiar with the local area, I speak the language but am obviously British and the fridge contains water, beer, wine, cheese, ham and some bananas. Not ideal prepping stores.

So, to answer your question;

1. Buy any food and water I can from the shops ASAP.
2. Log onto a Brit news channel
3. Depending on severity call British Embassy?
4. Stay in doors as long as possible
5. Contact NOK and tell them our location
6. Hope something works out for the best before the power goes down and i'm out the loop

am usually within 20-25 miles of home, car is usually topped up with fuel( i always top up when the tank reaches half full), so get home, forget about the supermarkets-if TSHTF its going to be full of panicky and violent people and anyway our food stocks are kept to their maximum, if on my own phone wife to fill water containers including all water butts if not already full, get off the main roads which will be filling up with drivers desperate to get home or to the supermarket or both, head out across country using all the minor country roads i know by heart, and get home a.s.a.p.

bulldogeagle, I wonder about the supermarkets, do you think it would be chaos? Early enough I would risk it, even for the random things the general population wouldnt think of (tape, matches, loo roll etc) but, am I wrong?
Am I walking into the lions den even bothering when, like Bulldog, I have good stores?

If you're not in the ideal situation of having a food supply already sorted, maybe think local for any last minute shopping?
I have 3 Asian shops within 5 minutes walk - great for long term foods such as rice, pulses and tins. Much more likely to accept cash in a grid-down situation and, I anticipate, will be overlooked by the majority heading for the supermarkets.

I think it is important to consider making the effort to grab last minute stocks if something happens. Having stores is a great piece of insurance, however in a situation where you may need to extend the life of what you have, or as above, just grabbing extra of stuff I would at least put myself in a position of having the option rather than not.

I have a grab bag for just such an occasion with cash, bags and a list of priority items. I might grab it, head out and then see it is chaos and decide my safety isn't worth it, but as least I have given myself more options.

I have the same plan of action :)

i think it probably depends on where you live, in my small town i am well known and i think i would be left alone to gather my final stock of food, but in a LARGE city i would not even think about it, are those few extra bits worth your life?? you may get beaten up, stabbed or even run over by the panicky citizenry, there will certainly be arguements and fights over the last tin of corned beef or that loaf of bread, so no, i really dont think its worth it! thats just my opinion, i'm sure there will be others who think differently.

To supermarket or not?

Depends on the emergency. If power were 'off' / computers 'down' then supermarkets would be closed - tills/card links wouldn't work. A sort of 'irrational behaviour' (a.k.a. Mob Mentality) would take over - probably including rioting/looting/attacking the innocent. In last summers riots there were several instances of idiots going to jail for looting from a pound store!!!!!! (Serve them right how utterly emarrassing  not to mention terrifying to be locked up for six months for stealing some sweets or two left footed shoes- and having to share a cell with  armed robbers/drug dealers/murderers).

I suppose being 'the grey man' preppers should just quietly slip home and be ready to bug 'in/out'.
That being said if the situation were not frantic obviously a last shop would be a good idea. - Essentials obviously plus a few 'tradeable items'.

Can't help but relate it to Supermarkets on Christmas Eve, lots of people go there, empty shelves and walk out with two full trolleys, all because the shops will be shut for 3 whole days! What would it be like if it became common knowledge that the shops won't get deliveries for a week because of TSHTF or fuel shortages or blockades or snow? How about 2 weeks? Of course that assumes it would be common knowledge.

For that matter how will average sheeple react if the shops put in restrictions on how much each person can buy?

I'm nowhere near yet, but having a good supply of pre stored food would at least give the option of checking the situation and either getting a top up shop or heading for home and holing up. I've also found myself looking out for items that may be ignored by most but could be useful.
