What Preps are you doing this week? Part 11
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 11
Had a bit of an outbreak of fruit flies the last couple of weeks. Think I found the source this morning - a bag of compost I put in the cellar. It's directly under one lodger's room, separated only by butt jointed floorboards, so they can get though. Or they can go in the kitchen via the cellar door, which is always open.
Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 11
This week I have been chopping more wood, and bringing in more peat for the fire. Forecast is for snow next week and we either get very little, or shed loads.
Spare clothes and blankets in the car in case I get stuck somewhere. I work night shifts now, so not many ppl out n about when I go to or from work.
Am needing to sort all my preps over the next few months as we are hoping to sell our house. We want to downsize (currently in a 6 bedroom house) to a 2 bed, with a few acres of land. We are both in our 50s and now want to focus on growing more food, raising more meat, and generating more electricity ourselves so we can work part time only. With the downsize we would easily be able to be mortgage free with leftover cash to set up polytunnels, solar, wind and more chooks.

Prepping for lifes little mishaps, and some of the bigger ones as well.

No snow forecast in Manchester. Cold forecast Friday morning, but no precipitation.
Had the boiler serviced yesterday. They used a subcontrator, and he said they'd done something wrong in the installation! No biggie, some clips and cement, and something about not sealed he said, latest regs or whatever. He knows a lodger's room is above it.
Anyway, he's obviously turned my settings up. Hot water is hotter. Other lodger's room warmed up in record time, and the radiators are definitely hotter. I'm not sure whether to leave it or turn them down to what I had them on. I suppose I could leave it a few weeks now.
Got shock off HMRC. I paid my tax last week, after they kicked me off Rent a Room. Yesterday they wanted another £1,900! Phoned them up, and I think it's sorted now. Apparently if you get a refund, you shouldn't declare it if you edit your self assessment after the initial submission, as they think they paid it twice.

Just ordered 12l of bio ethanol fuel for the fireplace...
And a new cctv camera since the last one never arrived via amazon got a refund found it on Ebay cheaper direct from the manufacturer. . .
Also got a new 2kw diesel heater on the way
Must get a jerry can of cherry whilst I'm off work
That's me as prepped as we can be for seriously cold weather
That'll bring me up to about 20l+ of bio ethanol for the 2x bio ethanol fireplaces 300 ml lasts about 1.5 hours ish
2x 15kg butane cylinders and a dehlongi darlec heater 207g per hour on medium (2.5 kW ish) gives 72 hours of run time per cylinder (3.01 days to be more precise
)
That's before dropping onto the refillable gas bottle and the propane radiant heater
Then the cartridge heater
I guess we are good for a while

Excellent preps. While you're all toasty and warm, think of poor old PPrep shivering in abject miseryYorkshire Andy wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2024 8:35 pm Just ordered 12l of bio ethanol fuel for the fireplace...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 11
Just seen a notice on my boiler saying DO NOT USE! Cheers for that. Just what I need on a Sunday between Christmas and New Year. He'd turned the heat and hot water to maximum as well! Gonna turn it off mid evening until lodger's up tomorrow. This is a 2 year old boiler that's been serviced yearly by them, and twice by the manufacturer! He said it was installed wrong, but I think it's very minor.
Think I sorted my tax out and paid £119 extra, instead of the £1,800 extra they wanted the other day! Two of the 3 payments I've made add up exactly to the amount they refunded me in April.

. I have 6l of bio ethanol for heating on a portable stove and that's it. I've got plenty of gas for cooking. I've found that heating preps seem to be expensive and often unwieldy.
Oh I will
Expensive well I depends on what your are looking at bio ethanol isn't cheap but is clean and fairly safe unless it catches fire in a none contained spill as it isn't a petrochemical afff foam doesn't work (dry powder ,co² or water mist does)..
As for gas heating
These are for outdoor use only like many
https://www.ukplanettools.co.uk/tough-m ... UIQAvD_BwE
Propane shouldn't be used indoors but we'll if its a shtf and baltic ................
More legal / safer option
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/286162412908 ... media=COPY
Then grab a calor / other local supplier brand of butane bottle off Facebook market place etc I rescued my calor bottles from ditches on country roads

Thanks for your suggestions. The outdoor heater looks to be the better option. This is relatively cheap and compact, and I'll most probably get one. The ebay link doesn't work, but if it refers to the type of indoor heater which contains the gas bottle, these heaters have a reputation for being unreliable and are not cheap. The safety cutout can be overenthusiastic and results in one not being able to get the heater going in these heaters. I've had a heater that behaves like this, and it could cut out at any time, if I could get it going in the first place. I don't do FB. The 15Kg cylinder I have was thrown away, but I haven't seen one for ages. I need this for cooking, although I have a camping stove and cylinders.I'll see if I can scrounge one, although this will be unlikely.
