It doesn't work. But you can find lots of info on that. And all that posts on forum and signs on fences to scare of trespassers are ridiculous. But I guess they work for someone.

My point is. If I was camping and some old fart came to me and decided to to get funny he had to go back home very sad or he had to be taken by police and possibly prosecuted. Either way I'd enjoy the rest of my day in piece.

Personally I think think the guys learned a lot from his "den" in the woods. He's made a camp, which I've never done. He's camped in the woods, which I've never done. And probably a number of things he's not had the chance to mention. Is it legal? No, we know that. Would we like someone camping on our property? No, but since I own only a house that's not likely to happen. Would I do the same as him? Hell yeah! I wish when I was a kid I did this, that way I would be a bit further along with things now than I am. There a lot of things in this country that get made illegal and it's a joke. The guy gets to spend some time with his girlfriend in the woods from time to time.....so what. Take it from me mate, enjoy it and if you get caught I'm sure you know what might come your way. But knowing what government agencies are like...probably nothing.

A lot of people brow beat on here about legal this and legal that. But ask yourself,if prepping was banned tomorrow would you stop doing it because it became illegal? This guys getting a hard time for doing something man kinds been doing for thousands of years. I bet this guys more mentally prepared and alert because of where he camped than some of us who perhaps spent some time at (legal)campsite. I want to know more about what his first night was like, did he sleep? What did he learn? Let's get it back on track eh? 11 pages of nonsense.....

I've unlocked this thread and removed four pages of nonsense. Keep it constructive and keep it civil, please. Bullying, name-calling and petty infighting won't be tolerated. If you lot were in the same room I imagine you'd be pulling each other's hair and stamping your feet.

Hi. Maybe somebody will help me here. I plan bicycle trip, probably next year. It will be probably Lake District or Yorkshire Dales - I want to keep it spartan simple, no campsites, no bathrooms, sleeping on fields in tent/bivi with woodfire - do you think it is possible without being kicked out from the land?

sorry. already found info ;-)

Welcome to Scotland :). I suspect we have a more relaxed attitude to wild camping because there is still a massive area of truly wild land available and, perhaps because of the midges, relatively few are hardy enough to camp whilst they're biting. My daughter has just come back from a 3 day camp/hike and is badly bitten, even being covered to the neck and the wrist, using a good quality midge net and Jungle Formula. It may be worth mentioning here, re Midges, that the pharmacist recommended Vitamin B for this. I hot-footed it to Holland & Barrett and the girl there knew immediately it was Vit B1 (thiamine, I think). Apparently, all the West Highland Way walkers take it. Hopefully we won't stink from taking it, but apparently the wee blighters don't like the smell. My daughter and I have already started taking it. Anyone else had any success with this. Anyone bugging out/camping in Scotland needs to know that, although midges won't kill you, even a few biting will drive you insane, which is why I haven't even considered it - yet :).

Hi. I thought about Scotland as well a it is nice, beautiful country judging by the pictures and Google maps. As about vit b - I 've headed about it but never tried. We used some sprays besides they rather stay away from camp fire (most of the Times)

Yes, there is truth in this. My hubby has pernicious anaemia and gets monthly B12 jabs. Midges never bite him. So i got a bottle of sublingual B12 on amazon and tried it last summer, and didn't get nearly as much trouble wi the wee sods. Might go on to take B-complex as well, see how that works.

Good to know! Now that I've had time to check, the pharmacist wrote down Vit B Complex, but at H&B the girl immediately went for Vit B1 - she takes it herself for midges and swears it does work (you have to remember she's selling the stuff, though - cynical, me? - never :)!) Probably Vit B Complex just covers the lot. Was told by pharmacist that if you feel tingling/numbness to stop taking them - you'll have a bit too much in your system. I think my daughter and I will take them every day for a week or so and then maybe every other day and see how we go. I am, for the first time, hopeful I won't spend the whole summer fighting midges every time I dig in the garden. There's a particular time of year when the female midges seem to swarm and are really vicious and the only thing you can do is get away from them. Apparently, they need extra blood to produce their young.
