as we have just had a 24hr power cut...yes starting at 3pm christmas day...It has made us upgrade our oil lamps and torches (yes ..a bit late,we had got complacent over the last couple of years)

so needing 2 head torches,a couple of wind up ones. bring back to life an oil lamp we have, and get some more.

I think lamps are essential eh ? they give a steady light to a whole room for hours, I got fedup of head torches they only light up a narrow area and need winding or batteries all the time. Think only useful in very short powercuts.. I use one to to go out and lock hens in at night though.

If you can find a garage/petrol station that sells paraffin on the pump you can get it for about £1.05 a litre instead of £6 for 4 ltrs.

I went out to our local one a few weeks ago and topped out a couple of 20ltr jerry cans. Also some do red diesel on the pump at about £0.85 a litre, and it is OK for running the Diesel genny.

Also look out at end of summer sales of BBQ lighting fluid as this is also paraffin, you might pick it up at 50p a litre or less.

I have a couple of UCO candle lanterns. Not over bright but the candles last 9 hours. Also just seen this on ebay so might get one to try.

Just bought 1 storm paraffin lamp off ebay, was only £4.98, thought I would just buy one, test it out, if any good I will get another 2.

Will let you know how it goes with it, when it arrives.

I have found that for me, paraffin lamps are the best solution. I cant be assed with headlamps stuck to my heid and the beam is too narrow anyway. Then there's the winding. Candles are ok but messy and not cheap if using them all over the house in a long powercut. So I will buy another paraffin lamp, hope to get a nice big glass one like the one we have already.

Non-electric lighting ?

Hi. I picked up a cheap storm latern the other week and filled it with parafin from homebase. It made the whole of the downstairs smell quite horribly.

Is it due to it being new? Wrong parafin? Or is it normal?

Cheers

Might want to get some "lamp oil" doesn't smell as bad as paraffin,
